We all keep a box of baking soda at home but not all of us know that you have the most versatile and effective tool in your household arsenal. It’s a powerhouse of a product. It’s most often used in cooking, and it’s primarily used in baking as a leavening agent. What happens is that in a combination with an acid, it creates bubbles and releases carbon dioxide gas, which then causes the dough to rise. Did you know that sodium bicarbonate was used in cooking green vegetables, as it gives them a bright green color? However, it affected their taste, so this process is not longer common. It is also used in Asian and Latin American cuisine to make a piece of meat more tender. Other than its usage in cooking baking soda it’s the cheapest remedy, and it has other surprising usages.

1. Heartburn, indigestion, and ulcer pain
If you are experiencing stomach acid, dissolve half a teaspoon of baking soda in a half a glass of water, and drink it every 2 hours. The key to baking soda’s capability to make better acid reflux, lies in the ingredient sodium bicarbonate. It will also soothe indigestion and heartburn, and it’s used for treating ulcer pain. However, remember not to use Sodium bicarbonate to often, since the excessive use might cause serious electrolyte and acid/base imbalances.
2. Tooth and gum Paste
For healthy teeth and gums, just mix 6 parts of baking soda with 1 part of sea salt and this will be an effective tooth and gum paste. The next step will be to blend them and apply the paste on your teeth and gums and leave it for 15 minutes. It will polish and clean your teeth, eliminate any plaque you have and it will get rid of bad breath.
3. Natural deodorant
A pinch of baking soda mixed with water is the easiest and simplest way to combat body odor. You might even apply it directly to your armpits. It’s the best substitute for the expensive deodorants that are full of parabens and aluminum.
4. Hand cleanser
You probably didn’t know that if you mix 3 parts of baking soda and one part of water you will get an efficient hand cleanser. Your hands get exceptionally clean and, as a plus, you will save your skin from all those bad harsh toxins.
5. Insect Bites and Poison ivy
Poison ivy is a poisonous Asian and North American flowering plant that will cause a rash on your hand if you touch it. To relive it use a mixture of baking soda and water that you’ll apply on the affected area. The same paste will also help with those annoying bug bites.
6. Foot soak and exfoliator
Instead of using expensive skin exfoliators just add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to a tub of warm water. Or you can even scrub the feet with the granules of the baking soda.
7. Sunburn remedy
You know that if you spent to much time at the beach without sunscreen, the result will be painful sunburn. Make yourself a bath and add a half a cup of baking soda to relieve the pain.
8. Relaxing soak
This one is multifunctional. Adding apple cider vinegar and baking soda to your bath, will not only soften your skin but also clean the drain and the tub!
9. Splinter removal
You know how annoying having a splinter can be. Well not anymore. Just put a mixture of baking soda an water twice a day to the affected area, and next thing you know – splinter gone.
10. Teeth whitener
If you love drinking coffee and tea on daily bases, they will most certainly leave yellow stains on your teeth. Instead of paying overprices teeth whitening treatments at your dentist add a little baking soda to a crushed ripe strawberry, and spread the paste onto the teeth. Brush them after 5 minutes and they will be white and shiny.
11. Improved sports performance
Some distance runners and swimmers use soda capsules to improve speed. It’s known as “Soda doping” According to researchers:”Essentially, sodium bicarbonate is an alkali substance that increases the pH of the blood. This seems to reduce and offset the acidity produced in the muscles during intense, anaerobic exercise that produces lactic acid most quickly, such as fast running or swimming.”
12. Baking soda as a natural household cleanser
There are so many usages of baking soda when it comes to cleaning. Can you believe that it was even used to clean the copper walls of the Statue of Liberty during its 1986 restoration? If it can clean that than it will most certainly clean the grime from your shower and bath, and it will get rid of the smell of your shoes. Also mixed with apple cider vinegar will clean the drains. Just sprinkle some soda down the drain, pour some apple cider vinegar, and after 15 minutes, rinse with hot water. The mixture of baking soda and water can be used to clean your baby’s toys, you can use it as a fabric softener, and as a whitening agent, and clean your pots and pans. It’s basically incredible.
