We were amazed by all the beautiful scenery by watching our favorite show of all times – Game of Thrones, but what was really happening behind the scenes? While we are impatiently waiting for a year or two until the final eighth season of the show to come out, let’s take a look at how Westeros is made to look as real as we see it on our screens. Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is a great part of GoT’s budget, with no doubt. It refers to the application of computer graphics to create or contribute to images in the series. Although it can be 2D, the term CGI is most commonly referred to 3D computer graphics used for special effects and creating whole movie scenes. We know you are probably dying to know what this looks like for your favorite show. Here are some scenes before and after CGI.
These fictional characters are represented with green balls on sticks in the real shooting of the scenes.
These will be later filled in with some CGI.
2. A lot of people
Of course, this is not physically possible, so they put a green screen and get the computer on.
And, voilà! A lot of people in costumes!
Using real-world backdrops up front and dropping in fantastical castles in the background is a pretty common practice.
Here is the final result.
4. The giant ice wall
It’s impressive how they ‘built’ it in the first place.
It looks amazing on screen!
5. Some scenes look like cartoons
It’s because they are made almost entirely out of CGI.
But we don’t mind, do we?
6. Dragons getting bigger
As the dragons get bigger, green sticks and pillows get bigger, too.
7. Background army
Don’t take this background army for granted.
It’s all thanks to the CGI.
8. Scenes full of CGI
To your brain, it all looks real, when in fact, it isn’t.
9. Old castles
This is surely easier than finding an actual castle.
10. Subtle changes
Some of the changes are a bit more subtle, like adding blue eyes and translucent horns to the Night King’s prosthetics.

11. The practical team does one thing, and the digital artists give one last layer.
Only to look like this in the end!
12. They use only this part of this particular castle
It does make you wonder why they bother with that when they fake 90% of it, but there you go…
13. CGI saved a lot of stunt horses from injury
And it all looked like this with our eyes.
14. Imagination needs to be present, too.
Imagine what it’s like looking at this canvas for actors.
15. But I bet they are having a lot of fun!
Just like we would be!
