Many of us grew up with the idea that we should go to school, get a job, then get married, and eventually have children. All in that order, of course! But, do you know anybody who’s done this in such order? There are certainly a lot of cases, but, let’s be realistic, it’s rare nowadays. Living your life at your own pace and the way you like is a basic human right, and the same goes for everyone. Many celebrities have decided not to have kids, for instance. Society has changed so much, and it’s completely acceptable and normal not to become a mother today. This is exactly what these 18 celebrities have done.

1. Oprah Winfrey

She does not have any children. Also, she is not even married, although she’s been with her boyfriend, Stedman Graham, since 1986. Her decision wasn’t free of controversy, but she didn’t let that stop her. You gotta love Oprah!

On not having children, Oprah had this to say:

“If I had kids, my kids would hate me. They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them.”

2. Jennifer Aniston

Over the years, Jennifer Aniston has been featured in tabloids due to pregnancy rumors, but they were never true. She was fed up with the constant discussion around her having children or not.

“I don’t think it’s fair. You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t mothering — dogs, friends, friends’ children,” she said.

3. Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler revealed that she doesn’t want children because she “doesn’t like them.” She explained, “I’m a great aunt or friend of the mother. I don’t want to spend that kind of time… I don’t want to have a kid and have it raised by a nanny.”

4. Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis

They have opted to be child-free, and she revealed exactly why they made that decision. Basically, it’s because she feels it’s “the way women get caught.” She suggested that there was also a time she didn’t want to be married either, but that things change.

5. Portia de Rossi

Although she has been married to Ellen DeGeneres since 2008, they have both been vocal about not having children.

“You have to really want to have kids, and neither of us did. So it’s just going to be me and Ellen and no babies — but we’re the best of friends and married life is blissful, it really is. I’ve never been happier than I am right now,” Portia explained.

6. Ellen DeGeneres

She wrote in her book, “We thought about it. We love to be around children after they’ve been fed and bathed. But we ultimately decided that we don’t want children of our own. There is far too much glass in our house.”

7. Betty White

She chose not to have kids because she was very focused on her career, and has never regretted it.

“I didn’t choose to have children because I’m focused on my career, and I don’t think as compulsive as I am that I could manage both,” she said.

8. Cameron Diaz

She realized how much work it is having kids and that she was never drawn to being a mother.

“It’s so much more work to have children. To have lives besides your own that you are responsible for — I didn’t take that on. That did make things easier for me. A baby — that’s all day, every day for eighteen years,” she said.

9. Helen Mirren

Here is another actress who realized that she has “no maternal instinct whatsoever.” She’s also a great supporter of those who decide not to have kids, and says, “I think an awful lot of women don’t really want children but feel they ought to. They think there’s something wrong with them if they don’t want to, but it’s not true.”

10. Rachael Ray

Rachel feels as though she doesn’t give her dog enough attention, let alone having a child, and she is probably right.

“I just feel like I would do a bad job if I took the time to literally give birth to a kid right now and try and juggle everything I’m doing,” she said.

11. Renée Zellweger

The actress admitted that having children was never her ambition.

She explained, “I never have expectations like ‘when I’m 19 I’m going to do this, and by the time I’ve hit 25 I’m going to do that’. I just take things as they come, each day at a time, and if things happen, all well and good.”

She grew up with eight younger siblings, and probably that’s why she decided that she wasn’t meant to have kids. But she indeed loves them!! She’s very close with all of her nieces and nephews and loves them as though they were her own.

14. Candace Bushnell

The author of Sex and the City loved her career of writing so much and took it very seriously, so she didn’t want to have kids because of it.

“I think it’s a career where you have to put the career first. I don’t have kids but — and luckily everyone isn’t like this — I think if you have that passion, in a way, your career is your child,” she explained.

15. Kim Cattrall

The Sex and the City star revealed that she once thought that she would have children, because that’s what she was told to do in life.

“I was feeling both the social pressures and my own biological clock ticking. And I felt somewhat cavalier: I could raise children by myself; how hard could it be?” she explained.

Ultimately, she realized that she wasn’t ready for motherhood.

She explained that she tries not to listen to the “shoulds or coulds” and goes beyond the pressure to please. “When I answered those questions regarding having children, I realized that so much of the pressure I was feeling was from outside sources, and I knew I wasn’t ready to take that step into motherhood.”

16. Sarah Silverman

Sarah admits that she does want kids someday, but doesn’t feel ready just yet.

“I want to have kids when there’s nothing else I want more, and I can make them my world. I figure, I’ll be a super-young-grandma age when I have kids,” she said.

17. Stevie Nicks

She connected her decision to her career.

18. Ashley Judd

She says that she doesn’t have children of her own because there are so many orphaned and abandoned children who need love.

“I figured it was selfish for us to pour our resources into making our ‘own’ babies when those very resources and energy could not only help children already here, but through advocacy and service transform the world into a place where no child ever needs to be born into poverty and abuse again. My belief has not changed. It is a big part of who I am,” she wrote in her memoir.
