We all deal with the common problem called dark elbows and knees. The reson for this is the dry skin and the build-up of dead skin cells – there are no oil glands in these areas.
But no worries, we have some of the best home remedies to lighten the dark skin and what’s more important – they’re natural and have no side effects.
1. Coconut Oil
Of course. A rich source of vitamin E, which does wonders for your skin. It keeps the skin hydrated, therefore prevents dryness, and lightens it.
Apply it directly on knees and elbows and massage gently for 1 to 2 minutes. You should try and reapply a few times during the day. Or, prepare a mixture with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and ½ teaspoon of lemon juice. Rub the mixture on the skin and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then wipe it off. Do this once a day.
2. Milk and Baking soda
It doesn’t get much kitchen-y than this. Milk contains lactic acid which reduces skin pigmentation and is also a rich source of calcium which prevents skin from going dry. Baking soda is known to be a gentle cleanser, so a mixture consisting of these two can do a lot for the skin on your knees and elbows.
Prepare a paste with 1 tablespoon each of milk and baking soda. Apply it on the dark areas and gently scrub it in a circular motion for 2 to 3 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water. Repeat until you get the desired results.
3. Lemon and Honey
Did you know that lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent? Just how many times have you read about hair lightening and teeth whitening with the help of lemon juice? Honey has enzymes that help make the skin soft and glowing, so it’s a win win combination with these two.
Mix the juice of one lemon with one tablespoon of honey. Apply it on the dark spots and leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash off with water. Repeat this remedy daily for a couple of weeks.
4. Turmeric and Milk Cream
Turmeric has antiseptic properties and is a natural bleaching agent which helps to reduce melanin in the skin. A mixture of milk cream and turmeric works well to lighten the skin on elbows and knees.
If you mix a little turmeric powder with 1 teaspoon of milk cream, you’ll get a paste that you can apply on your knees and elbows. Massage for a few minutes, then let it dry for 15 – 20 minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water.
5. Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera naturally lightens the skin and also keeps it hydrated and prevents dryness. It also protects it and helps replenish its moisture.
You need a fresh aloe vera leaf. Cut its edges and squeeze the leaf to extract the gel. Apply this fresh gel on the knees and elbows. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then wash it off with warm water. Repeat this twice daily for a few weeks.
