Hollywood’s favorite couple announced their separation less than a year after By The Sea was released, in which both actors appeared. However, it was unclear as to why they really split up. The movie that was written by Angelina Jolie was an attempt to save their relationship. But, after a 12-year-long relationship, “Brangelina” came to an end in 2016. Now the 42-year-old actress has finally spoken out about what exactly happened.
The Oscar-winning actress candidly revealed that her cancer scares did, in fact, put pressure on their relationship. The actress had a mastectomy back in 2013 after learning that due to a defective gene she had inherited from her family, she has a high-risk percentage of developing breast cancer. Also, Angelina’s mother had breast cancer and died from ovarian cancer, while her grandmother died from ovarian cancer.
Brad Pitt’s ex-wife has always encouraged women to look after their health. Angelina also said that having a double mastectomy didn’t make her any less of a woman.
There were a lot of rumors about why the actors divorced. But, in an interview on The Hollywood Reporter‘s podcast Awards Chatter, Jolie has revealed that the real cause they separated was her health problems.
“My life has been… I’ve had many, many extraordinary very fortunate things happen and it’s also been many things over the years that had been challenging. So that wasn’t a particular time when I wrote it… I had my mastectomy right before I had Unbroken. Over the span of that decade, I did lose my mother, I did have my mastectomy, and I did then have an ovarian cancer scare and had that surgery as well, and other things of course that happened in life that you go through.” the actress explained.
The 42-year-old Maleficent star tried to save her marriage with the 53-year-old actor who was rumored to have cheated on her with French actress Marion Cotillard.
About working together on the movie By The Sea she said: “We had met working together and we worked together well… I wanted us to do some serious work together… I thought it would be a good way for us to communicate.”
Jolie continued: “In some ways it was, and in some ways we learned some things. But there was a heaviness probably during that situation that carried on and it wasn’t because of the film. A piece of art can be something that’s healing or something that’s difficult. I don’t know.
“I’m glad we did that film because we did explore something together. Whatever it was maybe it didn’t solve certain things, but we did communicate something that needed to be communicated to each other.”
Despite their efforts, the couple got divorced in 2016.
