Little ballerina Hollie does the impossible: she is one of the rare ones to actually manage to provoke a reaction out of Simon Cowell!
Back in April 2009 when the auditions started, performer Hollie Steel from Accrington, England took the stage to audition for the third series of the ITV reality show Britain’s Got Talent.
Mind you, this was the season on which Susan Boyle famously performed “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Miserables, which managed to attract more than 100 million views on YouTube in the subsequent five days after the performance!
Hollie took to the stage in a pink ballerina tutu, a sleeveless purple top and a slick lower bun.
As she starts dancing, we see a beautiful, svelte girl, enjoying her performance, absolutely confident!
Next shot: we see Simon’s face in cringe, praying for a lightning to strike and kill him. He seems utterly bored, and rightly so, since these judges probably see 50 performers on average per day.
Everything seems to go smoothly; the girl is doing her thing, the judges are waiting for the whole shebang to be over, when we suddenly see Simon raising his hand to press the ‘no’ button.
However, in that particular split second Hollie opens her mouth to sing! What comes out of it is a professionally trained, operatic voice!
Cowell’s face changes from “Let’s get this over it” to “Wait, what?!” in a second!
Now this is utterly brilliant and funny, since ‘Coldwell’ is never the one to get emotional on the show. He is not really a touchy-feely kind of guy. More like the far opposite of having feelings.
The girl even manages to steal a smile from him while she is singing her song.
Her little hands are in fists as she is getting them close to her chest in a choreography that fits the lyrics and the tone of the song.
As soon as she sings the last word of the song with a high falsetto, the audience stands up on their feet to give the girl a roaring applause!
It was time for the judges to decide. Amanda Holden, Piers Morgan and Kelly Brook all voted and commented in favor of the girl.
It was Simon’s turn.
“Oh, Hollie, Hollie, Hollie…Let me tell you what I didn’t like.”
“I didn’t like what you were wearing cause you came over as just a typical little girl who wants to be a ballerina,” said Cowell.
“I wasn’t crazy about the song….Then, I heard you sing. And I think, Hollie, you’ve got a fantastic voice!”
As soon as he said that, a large, sunny grin appeared on Hollie’s face. She was in for the next round!
