“If they don’t know what Matilda is, they’re too young for you.” A famous saying. Which I just made up. But doesn’t mean it’s not true!
The thing is, if you ask anyone who was a kid in the 90s what their favorite childhood movie was, nine times out of then they’d say it was Matilda! But hey, time flies, and since the movie came out and improved everyone’s childhood, it’s been more than two decades. More precisely, it’s been incredible 21 years since then – and the kids from the 90s are all grown up now.
Which begs the question – what about our beloved cast of Matilda? What are they up to nowadays? Haven’t you wondered what happened to Mara Wilson and the others? Well, Aunty Acid has the answers – and a hat-tip goes to them. But be warned – there are surprises! Read on.
1. What happened to Mrs. Trunchbull (Pam Ferris)?
Oh boy, Mrs. Trunchbull was one mean-looking, scary lady! If you have a favorite teacher, just imagine the complete opposite of them – congrats! You’ve gotten the sordid Mrs. Trunchbull. Heck, even her name sounds harsh.
But what is Pam Ferris, who played the teacher from Hell back then, doing now in her life? Count your lucky stars because Pam is an angel compared to Trunchbull! But she sticks to awful characters it seems. Pam played Aunt Marge (eeewww) in Harry Potter, and made an appearance as Miriam in the dystopian science fiction movie Children of Men.
2. What is Lavender (Kiami Davael) up to?
Geeky little Lavender was Matilda’s best friend, and although often being just… strange… she was often the only support Matilda could find except her family. So where is Lavender, Kiami in real life, today?
Well, since then, actress Kiami Davael appeared in many TV shows right up until the 2000s. She was in Moesha, In the House, and The Steve Harvey Show. However, Kiami remained true to her nerdy nature – she abandoned her acting career in 2008, after she got a psychology degree at the University of Kentucky. Basically, she’s Lavender again!
3. Miss Honey, where are you?
She was the kindhearted hero who rescued Matilda from her bad parents, but what happened to the real Honey, played by Embeth Davidtz? Is she also a honey in real life? We need to know!
Well, it appears that she continued getting exciting roles, like playing Mary Parker in The Amazing Spiderman 2, and is currently acting in both Mad Men and Ray Donovan.
4. Bruce Bogtrotter (Jimmy Karz) has definitely changed!
No one can forget Bruce Bogtrotter! Just look at that face smeared with chocolate cake! But wait… Which face? What am I looking at?!
Yeah, that’s Bogtrotter right now! Don’t worry if you couldn’t recognize him – who could. Needless to say, actor Jimmy Karz has undergone a massive transformation since his childhood acting days. After appearing in the ER and The Wedding Singer, however, Jimmy made another transformation and left cinema completely – he now has a degree in Osteopathic Medicine at Philadelphia College.
5. Aaaand what about Mr. Wormwood (Danny Devito)?
Remember Miss Honey? Well, she saved poor Matilda from exactly this guy – Harry Wormwood, a villainous salesman! Danny DeVito played the role perfectly, which meant giving car dealers everywhere in the world a bad name.
Why was he the model of a scumbag father? Remember when he told Matilda: “I’m smart, you’re dumb”? Well, that’s WHY.
But luckily, DeVito is the polar opposite of Mr. Wormwood. And since then, he’s starred in iconic roles in movies such as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and he even voiced the Lorax in the eponymous cartoon.
6. Mrs. Wormwood (Rhea Pearlman)?
Like father, like mom. Matilda never got any motherly love from Mrs. Wormwood.
Rhea Pearlman continued getting role after role, and appeared in Frasier, Mad About You, Frasier and recently, The Mindy Project.
7. Finally. What happened to Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson)?
In 1996, Mara Wilson was one of the world’s most precious childhood sweethearts, starring in Miracle on the 34th Street and Mrs. Doubtfire.
After that short lived fame, however, Mara disappeared for a while, intending to get a taste of some normal life instead. But recently, she got back to the silver screens and appeared in various shows and movies, like for example when she voiced Jill Pill in BoJack Horseman.
She is now 30 years old – but that’s okay. I am, too.
