What a year. Eye-opening, one might say. All those celebrities we used to like until they suddenly screwed up big-time.
Why, though? That’s on everyone’s mind, regardless of what they think about these particular offenders. Why did they do what they did? Were they always so terrible? Did some of them just find themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time?
For some, that appears to definitely be the case. For others, the jury is still out. For others yet – it’s one big NOPE. They were always terrible people, but they were just very good at hiding it.
But then one can wonder why in 2017? Well, who knows, history is weird like that. You know how famous scientific inventions usually happen at several places around the world at roughly the same time, discovered by people who weren’t even aware the other ones existed?
Yeah, well, kind of like that, but in REVERSE. Because this year everyone screwed up instead of discovering some miracle cure or something!
Sigh. Well, without further ado, here’s the list of 2017’s Greatest Disappointments (thanks, Ranker). Fasten your seat belts because it’s gonna be a rough ride.
1. Harvey Weinstein (Producer)
A mere month ago, more than 60 women told their stories about how Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted them in exchange for helping their careers. The creepy stories go from harassment all the way to rape, including big names such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Rose McGowen, Cara Delevingne, and Lupita Nyong’o. Weinstein got swiftly punished – he was kicked out of the board of the Weinstein Company right away, and the Producers Guild banned him for life. But is that enough? Rape isn’t something that can be dealt with by merely losing a job – it’s a crime, and it deserves attention from the authorities.
2. Kevin Spacey (Actor)
Since actor Anthony Rapp publicly accused Kevin Spacey of sexually assaulting him in 1986 (when he was merely 14), twenty more allegations came up against dear old Kev. Well… Not so dear anymore. Spacey’s case is still developing, with reports coming that he was also sexually abused as a child. But as for now, Kevin Spacey’s fall has been one of the steepest and darkest.
3. James Toback (Director)
James is holding the numerical record here. Since October, some 310 (yes, you read that right, three hundred and ten!) women alleged that the writer and director James Toback had sexually harassed them. In his defense, he claimed this was “biologically impossible.”
4. Kathy Griffin (Comedian)
Well, this is almost a 180 from the previous ones. Kathy pretended to cut off President Donald Trump’s head off, which made her hire a lawyer. Who she later fired, and even got a tweet from the POTUS himself who felt personally hurt by her antics. In the end, CNN couldn’t take it any longer and replaced her.
5. Twiggy Ramirez (Musician)
The bassist of A Perfect Circle and Marilyn Manson Twiggy Ramirez (aka Jeordie White) got accused by his ex of rape and assault. Soon after the news broke, Manson fired him from his touring band.
6. PewDiePie (YouTuber)
Felix Kjellberg, aka PewDiePie on YouTube made a terrible miscalculation and lost a deal with Disney when he (trollishly) placed antisemitic comments in some of his videos. While that can be debated, sometime later he also used a racial slur during a livestream session of Firewatch. The result was a DMCA claim from the developers of Firewatch.
7. Ben Affleck (Actor)
Talk about irony here. Initially, Ben Affleck denounced Harvey Weinstein for his history of sexual assault, but then a video surfaced of the Ben actually groping actress Hilarie Burton’s breast. Well, at least Affleck apologized.
8. Justin Bieber (Singer)
2017 has also been a low point for one of the greatest musician sweethearts. Instead of making music, Justin spent most of the summer why he wouldn’t sing “Desapacito,” and then had a weird feud with Marilyn Manson via text messages. I can only shrug…
9. Quentin Tarantino (Director)
Tarantino is known to be a longtime collaborator of our #1, Harvey Weinstein. The two have worked together for more than two decades. So it was a little odd that, when news of Weinstein’s behavior broke out, Tarantino denied knowing anything about it at all. But that changed within mere days, when Quentin, oddly again, appeared to change his mind. “I knew enough to do more than I did,” Tarantino told The Vulture. Naturally, this got him some heavy flak – and for good reason.
10. Usher (Singer)
Not one, not two, but three separate people accused Usher of giving them herpes, and one of them is a pregnant woman. She claimed that she got the STD after she hooked up with the singer in a spa. However, after filing a $20 million lawsuit against Usher, her lawyer dropped her and it all ended – just like that.
