Amy Giberson and Justin Pounders had a childhood romance at the Sunshine Preschool in St. Petersburg, Florida. Three years old at the time, they sat together during class and spent a lot of time with each other before and after.
Sunshine Preschool’s former owner and teacher Diane Twar still remembers the two, more than three decades later.
“They had a blast with each other,” Twar told PEOPLE. “It was a quiet, bashful romance. They liked each other from afar, it was a young love, like a sweet crush, you know? They insisted on sitting next to each other in our school picture.”
Fast forward 30-odd-years. It’s 2014, Amy and Justin are both single and decide to try online dating for the first time. Justin registered on popular dating website Match.com, and as soon he saw Amy’s profile photo, he was swept off his feet. Amy also liked him a lot and after they texted and spoke on the phone several times, it was apparent there was chemistry happening.
During the first date, it was immediately obvious that this was more than your usual blind date. “It was like I had known him my whole life,” Amy told PEOPLE.
On year in a beautiful relationship, and things were getting serious and the couple was seriously considering marriage. It was then that Amy and Justin had a shocking realization.
“We were in the car and Justin casually mentioned that he loved my name because he had had a crush on a girl named Amy in his preschool,” she says. “Then I joked to him, ‘Well, it’s not me, so I don t want to hear about her!’ ”
But of course, they had both remembered what preschool they went to and they suddenly realized that it might have actually been Amy he was talking about!
“We asked our parents to dig up any preschool photos they had,” she says. “Justin’s mom found a photo of the two of us together and I just started crying, I was ecstatic. I was the Amy he had liked all those years ago! It was definitely meant to be.”
“Someone or something definitely decided we weren’t supposed to reconnect until now,” Justin says. “We’ve been so close to finding each other this whole time but didn’t until the time was right. And that’s now.”
“We’re doing everything backwards, but we don’t care. We’re best friends in love. And apparently we always have been,” Amy adds.
