Dementia is a disease which is very tough to handle. Patients suffering from it have memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. It’s a health problem which is happening when diseases damage the brain, such as Alzheimer’s or a series of strokes.
This is painful both, for the patients and their loved ones as well. It’s not wrong to say it’s like the person you love slips away from you slowly, and there is nothing you can do about it. People feel helpless.
Patients who have Dementia are most often placed in care homes because they need constant medical care. But there is one genius invention which can make these patients feel more at home.
It’s called True Doors, and it’s amazing. As it’s described on the web page, the project focus is on care homes, where true doors evoke positive memories and a sense of belonging. Missing home is a horrible feeling. It doesn’t matter if you are a student studying away, or you are someone who wants to help a loved one.
Basically, it is a made to measure sticker of doors, created for people to personalize the entrance to their room or apartment.
Astonishing isn’t it? The central idea for true personalized front doors began in 2007 during the final art school thesis of the creative director Marieke van Diepen. The creative Lifelong Inspiration team transformed this art project into an award-winning social enterprise.
The well-being service is especially useful for people with dementia, as these custom true doors stimulate memory and help with orientation, making it easier for people to find their rooms in new environments such as care homes.
Here you can see some of the doors.
It is important we don’t forget about our older generations, we owe it to them to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
