All is not well in stardom – singer Demi Lovato and actress Idina Menzel are going to court over charges of plagiarism, r1l reports. The two are being sued by a fellow musician who says that ‘Let It Go,’ the famous song from Frozen, copied one of his songs.
According to TMZ, a Chilean musician going by the name of Jaime Ciero has filed a lawsuit, not just against Demi and Idina (who voiced Queen Elsa in the animated movie), but also against the entertainment giant Disney.
He claims that the famous Frozen tune ‘Let It Go’ bears a striking resemblance to his own song called ‘Volar.’ Ciero’s song was recorded back in 2008, and the musician argues that it is very similar to ‘Let It Go’ in terms of note combinations, melodies, hooks, as well as the lyrics, production, and themes.
Demi doesn’t really look bothered. But can it spin out of control?
The Chilean singer says the ripped-off tune was “a huge international success reaching millions of listeners and landing on numerous charts of the most popular, top-performing songs”.
Idina Menzel is also getting sued. She starred as the main character in Disney’s animated movie.
Frozen was immensely popular, raking in a whopping $1.287 billion around the world, which, in May 2014, put it at number five as the highest grossing movie of all time.
Idina sang in the cartoon, but Disney wanted Demi to do the single.
In an interview, songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez once revealed that Demi, a former Disney Channel star, was chosen because her “dark past” drew associations to Elsa. Demi has spoken before of her troubles with drug addiction and eating disorders.
Anderson-Lopez said: “It just so happened that Demi was part of the Disney family already, and that she had a past that she’s pretty open about that is similar to Elsa’s journey of letting a dark past and fear behind and moving forward with your power.”
Demi hasn’t denied it, but actually admitted that she found Elsa’s journey felt “related” to her.
She said: “It’s so relatable. Elsa is finding her identity; she’s growing into who she is and she’s finally accepting her own strength and magical powers. Instead of hiding it, like she’s done all her life, she’s letting it go and embracing it.”
Demi sure looks like she’s magic.
Whatever happens, difficult days lie ahead, and we wish everyone involved good fortune!
