You’ve Been Eating Pringles Wrong This Entire Time

Have you ever woken up in the morning only to realize you’ve been doing something wrong your entire life? You might feel that way after you read this article. If you are a Pringles fan, you certainly don’t think about it much before eating it, but it turns out there is a hidden message behind the proper way of consuming the popular snack.

Pringles, one of the most-adored brands of potato and wheat-based stackable snack chips, is owned by Kellogg’s. They are sold in more than 140 countries and are a popular choice at all kinds of social gatherings. But, chances are you’ve been eating them wrong this entire time, so prepare to be surprised.

You might wish you knew this when you were younger, but there was probably no one to tell you the truth you are about to find out since most people make the same mistake.

First of all, it doesn’t seem that hard to eat a Pringle, right? You pop your hand down the tube, grab one and start munching. It’s not rocket science after all!

Well, yes, until it was discovered that there is a better way to consume this salty treat! Wait, what? There is a “proper” way to eat it? I’m all ears!

Here is the deal. The shape of a Pringle is referred to by the people at Kellogg’s as a hyperbolic paraboloid. Pringles are stacked more than a foot high and each of the pieces’ sides is flared upwards while the tips are sloping downwards. In this way, the concave of the chip arches like the picture below demonstrates. Which is apparently very important.

You are probably consuming Pringles by flipping it, but that’s totally wrong, my friends. Interestingly, you have to keep the chip at the same angle it was stacked in the packet.

Why is that so? Because it supposedly improves the flavor. A lot! At least that’s what Kurt Simon, the brand’s marketing director claims. “Really, ‘wrong’ is in the eye of the beholder. It’s like, toilets flushing counter-clockwise in Australia: what’s right for me might be wrong for someone else.”

He continues: “But I will say we’ve noticed that most people do eat them, as you would say ‘upside down,’ I think because they fit right on your tongue that way. But that’s not necessarily what I do.”

Here comes the funniest part. “How do I eat them? You, and maybe most people, would call it eating it ‘upside down,’ I would call it eating them the right way.”

What makes Pringles different is the mix of flavor powder that is placed on the chips. Producers do this with the help of thousands of tons of shiny factory machinery. It was only recently that both sides of the Pringle were seasoned evenly.

Once you notice this subtle difference, you will realize there is indeed a right way to eat it.

Here’s how some of the most popular food items around the world are produced.
