It is brave to be allowed to be creeped out by the horror that sometimes exists in the world. Although never pleasant to look at, it is also important to sometimes not look away. These fifteen astounding photographs have been taken in different times and places, but they all share an incredibly eerie quality which is sure to chill you down to your bones.
1. A photograph of a recently deceased woman
In the Victorian era, the only photograph in one’s life was often taken shortly after it had ended. A photograph was an honor, but also a luxury and some families used to pay for their lost ones to be photographed as a memory.
2. The room of a murder victim
This photo of a doll which belonged to a tragically murdered young child was taken in 1939.
3. Falling from the ceiling
This petrifying photograph was most probably the result of reusing film, which resulted in two separate photos overlapping.
4. A jumper caught on camera
This chilling picture taken at the Yangtze River Bridge unknowingly caught a person committing suicide.
5. In the aftermath of the Jonestown Massacre
This creepy shot from the air shows the immediate aftermath after cult leader Jim Jones’ 918 followers collectively committed suicide at the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project in northwestern Guyana.
6. The Amityville, Long Island haunted house
A photograph from the notorious Dutch mansion in Amityville, New York where the DeFeo serial killings took place showing a boy peeking out from a room. The events described in the book “The Amityville Horror” were the inspiration for an 18-installment film series between 1979 and today.
7. A recent picture featuring a visitor from a different time
This photo taken in 1990 features Boothill Cemetary in the background, an Arizona graveyard considered to be haunted.
8. The Annabelle doll
Annabelle is a Raggedy Ann doll alleged by demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren to be haunted residing in a glass box at The Warrens’ Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut. The story served as the inspiration for the films Annabelle (2014) and Annabelle: Creation (2017).
9. A ghostly visitor
This famous photograph from 1975 was taken in Worstead Church, located in North Norfolk on the eastern coast of England. The photographer claimed they didn’t see anyone behind the women at the moment when the shot was taken.
10. The ghost of a little boy
This photo by Neil Sandbach was taken on a farm in Hertfordshire, England when a couple who was to be married at the site asked him to take photos for their prospective guests. When Neil went home and uploaded the photos to his computer he was shocked to find an anomaly present in the old barn area – a child dressed in white looking back at him around the corner of the building.

14. Blanche Monnier
Blanche Monnier, also known as La Séquestrée de Politers (The Sequestrated of Politiers) in French was a French woman from the city of Politiers who was secretly kept locked in a small room without sunlight by her mother for 25 years. She was initially imprisoned after setting her heart on marrying a lawyer who was not to her mother’s liking. The picture was taken after she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after being rescued by police who acted on an anonymous tip-off.
