Back in the summer of 2016, Ellen Degeneres did what almost never happens on live television: took a call in the middle of her show. Whether staged or not, the famous host picked up a ringing telephone from behind her seat which connected her to her secretary Jeannie. The receptionist, who was going through e-mails at the time, informed the moderator about one that she thought was worth reading.
It was a message from two women who were part of the live audience on that very day, mother and daughter Becky and Kim Jeger.
“I am a 30-year-old breast cancer survivor. This week, I found a new lump and just learned I need to get an MRI to figure things out. I am a strong person, but right now, I am scared,” Kim’s message read.
Kim was diagnosed with cancer at a time when her mother, Becky, was already fighting through stage four ovarian cancer.
“Your show keeps me going. I eagerly await four o’clock when I know you will bring me smiles and happiness. Thank you for being there for me” the letter to Ellen said.
The two brave women were immediately invited to the stage to talk about their story, only for Kim to reveal two items of excellent news: not only she had recently found out she was cancer free, but she was also getting married!
Degeneres then proceeded by heaping presents upon her (un)expected guests, which included an assortment of wedding gifts under the theme ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ and $10,000 to help with wedding expenses.
