Friends wasn’t just a hit TV show, for some it captured the Zeitgeist of the time, others knew the six main characters inside out and could (still!) quote them at the drop of a hat, or a smelly cat.
First aired on the 22nd of September 1994, the show ran for ten seasons until the finale on May 6th 2004. While the show made a big impact on the viewers, what of the cast, who lived the lives of Rachel, Monica, Ross, Chandlar, Phoebe and Joey for those ten years, as well as living their own lives.
David Schwimmer opens up about the reality of dealing with the attention, then and now. Things moved fast, especially in the beginning. “It was pretty jarring and it messed with my relationship to other people in a way that took years, I think, for me to adjust to and become comfortable with,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter Podcast, which aired Monday. According to David, it was hard for him as a trained actor to go from observing and engaging with people to what he calls the “absolute opposite.” He says fame “made me want to hide under a baseball cap and not be seen. And I realized after awhile that I was no longer watching people; I was trying to hide. So I was trying to figure out: How do I be an actor in this new world, in this new situation? How do I do my job? That was tricky.” Wow, that’s a lot of internal juggling there.
