In case you’ve been living under a rock for a while, here’s the biggest news item this week: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got engaged!
The wedding, however, is still way off; the adorable couple is scheduled to marry in Spring 2018. And while most people have a good idea about who the Suits actress is, there’s still a whole lot more we don’t know about Princess Meghan. Thanks to AuntyAcid though, today we will be correcting that.
Alright, sit down, take out a pen and paper, and let the lesson begin! Here are some facts you probably didn’t know about Meghan Markle.
1. Meghan has a lot of cute nicknames
For example, her mum Doria calls Meghan ‘Flower’… but also MM, M&M, Meg, Nutmeg and so on! SHWEET!
2. She’s into cooking
Reportedly, the soon to be royalty is also very fond of cooking. She often loves preparing dishes for her friends and family, and if you take a look at her Instagram, you’ll see plenty of pics of her food. Congratulations, Harry!
3. Her passport is her life
Her jobs makes her travel frequently – maybe too frequently. But she also likes traveling for holidays. Once, she went driving around New Zealand in a camper van, and another time went biking through the mountains of Vietnam.
4. Once, she was a freelance calligrapher
Before she got super famous, Markle worked for Dolce and Gabbana as a freelance calligrapher. But, she was also a professional when it came to writing celebrity wedding invitations. She said: “I used to be a calligrapher for weddings and events — that was my side job while I was auditioning. I think handwritten notes are a lost art form.”
5. Move away, Kim Kardashian, Meghan’s come to get her hair done!
The two celebrities share the same hairdresser, Michael Silva. To be fair, he’s a sort of a celebrity too, ha.
6. Meghan speaks Spanish
It was a job requirement back when she worked at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires. So, it’s Spanish, but Argentinian Spanish.
7. She really loves dogs
The Princess already owns two cute dogs, Guy and Bogart. Just look at them!
8. She thinks voting is very important
In her own words: “I ticked the boxes on my absentee ballot last week, closing my eyes and thinking of my great grandparents who didn’t have this right.” Well, that’s one thing she’ll have to give up in the future, as members of the British royal family have to remain politically neutral.
9. She’s been married before
It was back in 2011. She married Trevor Engelson, her acting producer, but it didn’t last long. Work seemed to be incompatible with the marriage and they divorced in 2013.
10. She’s been criticized for dating Prince Harry
Since their romance went public, Meghan and Harry got a lot of media attention – and some of it wasn’t all that pleasant. This even made Harry make a public statement concerning all the flak against Meghan. He said:
“Some of it has been hidden from the public – the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed…”
Poor Meghan. But also lucky. Harry obviously loves her to protect her so much!
11. She loves yoga
Her great figure is, apparently, great thanks to yoga. She’s been doing it a long time now since first finding out about it in her youth, as her mother is a well-known yoga instructor. It runs in the family!
12. She also engages in a lot of charity work
One of Markle’s passions are women’s rights, which even made her travel all the way to Rwanda and try to raise awareness there: “I think there’s a misconception that access to clean water is just about clean drinking water; which, of course, it is but it’s so much more than that,” she later said of her experience. “Access to clean water in a community keeps young girls in school because they aren’t walking hours each day to source water for their families.”
13. Meghan isn’t really… her first name.
She was born as Rachel Megan Markle but opted for her middle name for work-related purposes.
14. Her family has a diverse background
Her father is African-American, and her mother is Dutch-Irish. This is what she said about her mixed roots: “Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating. While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”
