We all know and love Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen on How I Met Your Mother. But besides his role on the extremely popular sitcom, which went off air in 2014 after nine seasons, Segel has also starred in a number of successful movies. The 37-year-old was in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up, he wrote the script and played the lead role in 2008 romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and he voiced the villain in the animated comedy Despicable Me. Jason got the role on How I Met Your Mother because the creators of the show were big fans of Freaks and Geeks, a teen comedy-drama series which starred the actor.

As a child, his favorite superhero was Superman. In fact, he was so obsessed with the Man of Steel that he wore a cape under his clothes until he was 12!

4. Full frontal
That scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall where he gets dumped while being naked was actually based on his own experience. He said, “The whole time I’m thinking this is really, really funny. I’m going to use this in a movie someday. And slowly her voice became like the teacher from Charlie Brown, you know, just wha-wha-wha, wha-wha-wha, while I was slowly constructing the scene in my mind.”

5. Bad breath
Because of his smoking, his HIMYM co-star Alyson Hannigan, who played his romantic interest, refused to kiss him. She compared the experience to “kissing an ashtray”. So, they made a deal that he would pay her $10 for every cigarette he smoked. However, he ended up owing the actress a lot of money, which is why he finally gave up his smoking habit.
6. The role that never was
Jason admitted he was supposed to be in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the comedy starring Steve Carell. Director Judd Apatow even wrote a role especially for him. But the studio refused to sign him, apparently because he wasn’t famous enough.

In high school, he used to play basketball. And he was really good at it, so much so that they used to call him ‘Dr. Dunk’.
8. The source of inspiration
The inspiration for writing Forgetting Sarah Marshall came from splitting up with his Freaks and Geeks co-star Linda Cardellini. But she wasn’t the one who broke up with him while he was naked.
9. The idol
His idol is Peter Sellers. Jason always brings a photo of the English comedian to set for inspiration.
10. Piano man
He’s not just an actor – he is a musician as well! Jason can play the piano in real life.
11. I pronounce you…
He’s an ordained minister. In 2010, a couple randomly asked him to officiate their wedding ceremony, and he did it on The Tonight Show, with host Jay Leno as a witness.
