It’s been a long thirteen years without a new episode of Friends. The tenth season concluded on May 6, 2004, and broke the hearts of million viewers who begged for more. The American sitcom became one of the most popular and loved tv show on the planet.
It is still the ultimate classic when it comes to boring raining nights with your bffs and it’s never going out of fashion! I still play it whenever I feel sad. The show broke all the records, but some secrets remained uncovered. There are some facts that not even hardcore fans know.
Many people complain about Monica’s apartment, and how unrealistic it was. It is partly true, because her apartment would have cost at least $4,500 a month in today’s money. However, luckily for Monica, she was able to afford it due to inheriting the rent-controlled apartment from her grandmother!
When Joey and Rachel started being ‘a thing’, the cast was weirded out. They all said that these didn’t “belong together, and it wasn’t right.”
3. Poker face
“The One With All The Poker” was inspired by the director getting the cast to play poker together. This was done so that they culd bond and become closer.
At the beginning of the franchise, the cast would all watch the show together. Those were the days!
Originally, Jennifer Aniston was considered for Monica, and Courteney Cox was considered for Rachel. However, they wanted to play each other’s roles.
Ursula Buffay was introduced into the show to explain that Phoebe Buffay is the twin sister of Lisa Kudrow’s character on Mad About You. Wow!
The network got nervous while they shot a scene that showed Monica having sex on the first date. They actually thought the audience would think badly of the character. For that purpose, they took a survey.
The results were really surprising. According to Marta Kauffman, the survey concluded: “For sleeping with a guy on a date, do you think Monica is: A) A Slut, B) A Whore, C) Too Easy, D) None Of The Above.” She said that “it was all none of the above. Nobody cared except for this one guy.”
Matt LeBlanc did dislocate his shoulder while filming “The One Where Nobody’s Ready”! That’s why he was wearing a sling for a few episodes during Season 3.
10. So similar
Matthew Perry is actually very similar to Chandler’s character. He actually helped many of his friends with their auditions for the role.
11. Theme song
According to Jennifer Aniston, none of the cast liked the theme song.
12. A long time
It took hours to shoot the title sequence, and everyone had “pruney fingers” by the end!
13. 10 Years
During the whole 10 years of filming, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow had lunch together every day. They even had the same food all the time!
14. Final pay
During the final season, the main cast were paid $1,000,000 per episode. This was the highest salary ever paid to a television ensemble at the time.
15. A hoax
Lisa Kudrow was devastated when she believed a hoax reunion was real. She was really upset that she wasn’t invited.
16. How You Doin’?
Matt LeBlanc’s daughter has started saying “How are you doing?”. Whenever daddy told her it was “how you doin’?”, she told him that no, it should be “how are you doing?”
17. Saturday night live
Jennifer Aniston turned down a job on Saturday Night Live to be on Friends. Yay!
Hank Azaria auditioned for the role of Joey twice, but was rejected. They did call him back and he did an excellent job as Phoebe’s boyfriend David!
Ellen DeGeneres was actually asked to play Phoebe, but she turned down the role.
Throughout 10 seasons, Phoebe drank 227 cups of coffee, which was the most coffee of any character.
Ross has two birthdays. He once said his birthday was in December, and in a different episode, he said it was on October 18th! Hilarious!
When Friends premiered, People gave it a D+ rating and Time called all the characters a group of “dysfunctional morons.” No way!
23. Bruce Willis
When Bruce Willis guest starred on the show, he donated all the money he made from the episodes to charity.
24. Ugly Naked Guy
Ugly Naked Guy was an uncredited role. Many people believed he was played by Michael Hagerty, who is known for playing Mr. Treeger. Anyway, he was actually played by a man named Jon Haugen.
25. Who was he?
Jon was later asked why he never came forward before his identity was discovered in 2016. He simply explained: “I was just keeping it mellow because Warner Brothers was keeping it mellow. They wanted everybody to have a guess who I was.”
26. Not naked
Neither Haugen nor David Schwimmer were naked while filming.
Matthew Perry convinced the writers to scrap a storyline where Chandler went to a male strip club. He did it because he really liked the sandwiches they had there.
28. Never ever
The pilot tested so poorly that Friends almost never made it on air!
There are a lot of episodes where there are obvious doubles standing in for the cast members. The woman in the picture is supposed to be Monica, for example!
Lisa Kudrow’s real pregnancy was written into the show. However, because Monica and Chandler couldn’t have children, they had to hide Courteney Cox’s pregnancy during the last season.
NBC told the creators of Friends that they needed to have an older character on the show because no one would watch a show with a cast of 20-year-olds! So silly, right?
