Much to the ire of literary aficionados, there are many discrepancies between fantasy literature and its on-screen adaptations: story lines are frequently altered, seemingly more dramatic scenes are added and even characters that simply do not exist in the books are invented. We witnessed all of these interventions in the movie remakes of J.R.R. Tolkien masterpieces and the Game of Thrones television series is no different. What is strikingly similar in the adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s a Song of Ice and Fire series for TV to Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is the casual overlooking of the characters’ real age.
Hobbits that looked like pre-school children simply were not going to be cool enough for the big-screen epics that both trilogies became, and probably it was the same thinking behind not casting a fourteen-year-old as Jon Snow. But just for the fun of it, here is how old Game of Thrones characters actually were at the beginning of the saga and what actors could have actually played them.
