10 Home Remedies For Leg Pain

Leg pain is experienced by people of all ages and the pain can range from a dull ache to multiple stabbing sensations. This can happen in one or sometimes in both legs but you can easily get rid of it with different home remedies.

The pain can be very uncomfortable and annoying which can make it hard to put weight on your leg. Other symptoms include weakness and numbness.

Often, the pain is due to a cramp, muscle spasm or fatigue, nutritional deficiencies, dehydration or standing up for a long time. At some other times, it can be a sign of muscle strain or stress fractures.

1. Cold Compresses

If you feel pain after physical activity, then you should apply cold compresses. They will help reduce the pain by numbing the affected area. They also control swelling or inflammation.

  • Wrap ice cubes in a thin towel (or use frozen peas)
  • Apply this on the affected area for 10-15 min
  • Repeat this a few times

Note: Make sure to not apply ice directly on the skin, since it can cause frostbite.

2. Massage

Massaging your leg promotes a faster recovery from muscle damage that is causing the pain. It improves blood circulation and relieves stress or anxiety.

In a 2012 study published in the Science Translational Medicine journal, researchers concluded that 10 minutes of massage therapy attenuates inflammatory signaling after exercise-induced muscle damage.

  • Rub some warm olive, coconut oil on the area
  • Using gentle firm strokes to massage your legs for 10 min
  • Repeat 2-3 times a day.

3. Turmeric

Turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder with warm sesame oil
  • Apply it to the affected area while rubbing it gently
  • After 30 minutes, rinse it off with warm water
  • Repeat twice a day

Note: If you take blood-thinning medicine, you should consult your doctor before using turmeric.

  • Add 1 to 2 cups of unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a bathtub of warm water
  • Soak the leg in it for 30 min

This salt contains magnesium which helps to regulate nerve signals in the body and relax the muscle by reducing pain and swelling.

  • Add ½ cup of Epsom salt to a hot bath
  • Soak your legs in the water for 15 min
  • Repeat 2-3 times a week

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of tart cherries can help prevent soft tissue injury and pain. According to some researchers in 2012, the juice is a safe way to treat muscle pain and inflammation.

  • Eat ½ cup of fresh, organic tart cherries
  • Or drink 1 cup of tart cherry juice daily

Note: Do not drink tart cherry juice if it causes abdominal discomfort or diarrhea.

Ginger can also reduce pain by improving circulation and blood flow that helps relieve muscle pain.

  • Massage the sore area with ginger oil 2-3 times a day
  • Or drink ginger tea 2-3 times a day

Lemon helps to maintain the pH level of your body and avoids pain and inflammation.

  • Mix equal amounts of lemon juice and castor oil

People who have low vitamin D levels can get symptoms of leg pain and body aches. This vitamin helps regulate calcium and phosphorus that are essential for nerve and muscle functioning. Expose your body to sunlight for 10-15 mins daily. Or eat vitamin D-rich food like salmon, sardines, milk, orange juice, or cereal.

It is important for muscle and nerve functioning which also prevents dehydration. Every food that is rich in potassium can help fight leg pain, like baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, plums, raisins, tomato juice etc.

  • Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol under control
  • Avoid drinking or smoking
  • Drink 2-3 cups of tea daily
  • Manage your blood sugar level if you have diabetes
  • Do stretching exercises 10 minutes daily.
