It was the distant 1962 when Janice Rude and Prentiss Willson met as undergraduates at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. Although the couple fell in love and got engaged, they split because of their parents. However, 50 years later, they discovered something shocking and fate brought them back together to meet again. It seems they were simply meant for each other.
In 1961, Janice Rude was working part-time in a cafeteria to help pay her way through college. One day, she noticed Prentiss Willson and fell in love with him at first sight. After that, Prentiss started visiting the cafeteria more often, only to see this beautiful woman. Little did he know that Janice felt the same towards him.
Then one evening, during a pre-Thanksgiving dinner, Janice noticed that Prentiss didn’t show up.
She found out that he was 150 miles away at his family’s home and decided to make a bold move. Janice got into her car and drove all the way to his house. “That was bold for me,” Janice says.
That’s how they fell for each other and quickly realized they wanted to get married. They got engaged, and in 1962, it was announced in the local newspaper.
However, something terrible happened soon after. Janice’s father didn’t approve of their relationship and gave her an ultimatum. She was supposed to end it with Prentiss or he would stop paying her tuition. “It wasn’t going to work for me. I had to get a college degree,” Janice says.
That’s how they went their separate ways. Both of them married other people, but never forgot their first love.
But incredibly, that wasn’t the end of their story. One day, fate brought them back together in an amazing way. Years later, both Janice and Prentiss’ mothers passed away a few months apart. But both of them have kept one thing at home that somehow connected them and their children, even though they never met each other. Both Janice’s and Prentiss’ mother kept the exact same newspaper clipping from the 1960s — the one announcing the couple’s engagement.
As it turns out, they knew their children’s love was genuine. Janice and Prentiss felt that this wasn’t a simple accident.
The shocking discovery led Janice and Prentiss to get in touch with one another again. They were now single and eager to meet. On June 20, 2010, Janice and Prentiss met again to see if there was still a spark. Prentiss pointed out that Janice was wearing the same color pants as Thanksgiving 1961 and Janice was absolutely amazed by his comment. The feelings were still there.
Six months later, 49 years after they first met, the couple got married. Finally, 71-year-old Janice Rude became Janice Willson!
“We are so happy. Our marriage is perfect. And of course, we have very few years now to live it, but it will be perfect,” Janice said.
