Jim Carrey is set to face trial over the death of his ex-girlfriend. Cathriona White, after an alleged revelation was made that it was the Canadian-born actor that supplied the prescription drugs White used to commit suicide.
Now, Cathriona White’s mother and former husband are suing Carrey claiming the star was complicit in the death of the 30-year-old makeup artist.
On Wednesday, the 31st of May, Los Angeles Superior Court judge Deirdre Hill suggested the court would not be throwing out the case against Carrey, despite his lawyer, Raymond Boucher, filing a motion to dismiss it.
“Mr. Carrey loved Ms. White dearly and so obviously it will be a very painful process for him,” the barrister said during a hearing.
White, from Cappawhite in the Republic of Ireland, was found dead on the 28th of September 2015, four days after she overdosed on prescription pills in her home in the LA suburb of Sherman Oaks. She passed away aged 30, only days after she and Carrey had split up.

Brigid Sweetman, Ms. White’s mother, claims 55-year-old Carrey provided the prescription drugs, Ambien, Propranolol, and Percocet, her daughter overdosed on.
White’s ex-husband, Mark Burton, says the prescriptions were found in pill bottles bearing the name Arthur King. Burton believes the name is Carrey’s pseudonym and claims the coroner “determined that the drugs had been obtained by defendant Carrey under a bogus name.”
The civil suit also alleges Carrey had given White three sexually transmitted diseases – gonorrhea, Herpes 1 and Herpes 2 – and was exerting pressure on her not to reveal the fact. Former husband Burton had previously revealed texts between the two lovers, days after Cathriona’s father passed away, which indicated the nature of their allegedly destructive relationship.
Documents have been filed as part of the court complaint which contain written evidence from White herself that she felt “disrespected, degraded, called a whore, an opportunist, threatened” and was made to feel like an “ungrateful bitch” and “damaged goods” by Carrey.
The comedian has denied all the allegations, which his lawyers have called ‘predatory’ and ‘malicious’. At the time of White’s passing, Carrey released the following statement:
“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona. She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”
