Forty-three-year-old actor Joaquin Phoenix is said to be in talks to play The Joker in an upcoming Joker origin movie. He is claimed to be on the top list of actors to play the notorious Batman villain, according to director Todd Phillips. As Variety reports, Phoenix is favored to Leonardo DiCaprio, who was another favorite to land the role among a host of top names.
Some sources claim Phillips met with the Puerto Rican actor late last year and is currently awaiting Warner Bros.’ consultation. However, the company has denied these reports.
“Insiders stress that Jared Leto, who starred in Suicide Squad as the Joker is still on board as the character in the DC universe and that this Phoenix has no effect on what happens with Leto’s character in future DC films,” Variety claims.
The upcoming movie will be under a new banner of DC Comics. Jared Leto, who is set to reprise his role as the Joker in Suicide Squad 2 won’t feature in this film. There were also rumors that Leonardo DiCaprio was the first on the list to perform in Phillips’ upcoming movie. However, that will probably not happen.
Moreover, this wouldn’t be Phoenix’s first involvement with DC Comics adaptations. He was once considered for the role of Lex Luthor in the pre-production to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Describing the film to podcast host Joe Rogan, Phillips’ agent’s friend, comedian and actor Brendan Schaub said:
“It’s dark. It’s like a dark Joker. As a kid, he had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.”
Scott Silver will join Phillips as a co-writer on the upcoming film. The movie follows the story of the Joker becoming a veteran criminal during the 1980s.
