Some eagle-eyed observers among the millions watching the British royal family closely have noticed one minor but important difference between Prince William and Kate Middleton which have led them to question their commitment to one another.
The Duchess and Duke of Cambridge are regularly spotted together, often photographed standing or sitting side by side. Although by all means they appear like a happily married couple, some social media buffs noticed a trend in several of their photographs – Middleton proudly wears her engagement ring and subtle wedding band, while William’s wedding ring is missing.
After the royal wedding in 2011, a spokesperson from the Buckingham Palace commented on the reasons behind the Prince’s decision to go ringless.
Basically, the Palace claims it’s down to personal preference. “It was something that the couple discussed but Prince William isn’t one for jewelry,” the statement claimed.
In fact, it’s not an uncommon decision among royals. In the United Kingdom, the tradition of men wearing wedding bands didn’t start until World War II. However, the men of the royal family have never really warmed to the tradition.
Besides Prince Charles, who wears his next to his signet ring, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of Cambridge are obviously sticking with the British upper-class tradition of not wearing a ring at all.
