10 Makeup Techniques From The Makeup Artist Who Taught Kim Kardashian Everything

Mario Dedivanovic is one of the most influential makeup artists in the world today. He has collaborated with countless stars on their red carpet appearances and worked for every famous beauty magazine. Kim Kardashian said Mario “has created my signature glam look and my love for makeup is inspired by him! He has taught me every makeup trick I know and use until this day.”

Now, Dedivanovic is touring the world teaching a makeup Master Class, sharing his secrets with the world. Here are the 10 makeup techniques that are behind Kim Kardashian’s look.

1. Apply Liquid Foundation Everywhere

Applying foundation only on your face and neck is a common mistake. Mario suggests applying foundation everywhere, including your ears, your chest, your arms, and your legs. This will make your skin tone even and blemish-free.

2. Load Up On Moisturizer

While most makeup artists prefer using a primer to start out with a clean and smooth base, Dedivanovic and Kardashian skip the primer entirely. Instead, they apply a hydrating moisturizing cream, such as Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, all over the face, neck, and chest. The makeup artist believes the primer creates a “barrier between the skin and the makeup” which is detrimental to the final look.

3. Makeup first, hair second

Although it’s tempting to be done with your hair first when getting ready for a big night out, in Mario’s book, this is a big no-no. The celebrity makeup artist always starts with makeup so hair products, like hairspray and gel, don’t accidentally get on the face and ruin the entire look.

4. Use A Puff For Balance

When applying eyeliner or filling in eyebrows, the effect can be ruined if one doesn’t have a steady hand. There is a simple solution: use a puff. Dedivanovic loops his fingers through the handle and rests the puff against the face as he fills in the brows and lines the eyes. The puff allows him to have better balance, and it also helps to avoid smearing the foundation.

5. Cream Before Powder

Mario has perfected the Kardashian eyeshadow technique by sticking to one rule: cream before powder. The makeup artist avoids using eye primers and goes straight to the cream shadows. He then intensifies the color of the cream by dusting a bit of eyeshadow powder on top, which creates a thick and rich hue that really stands out.

6. Brow Secrets

Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow Wiz in the shade Medium Brown is what Dedivanovic uses to fill in Kardashian’s brows. He starts off with a feathered look at the inner corners and then uses a bit more near the outer tip to create a natural, gradient effect.

7. Heavy On The Eye Liner

For darkly-rimmed eyes just like Kim’s, saving on eyeliner is not the answer. Her makeup stylist actually uses quite a heavy-handed technique to really make her eyes pop. He applies ‘three or four layers of eyeliner’, starting with MAC Eye Kohl at the base. Then, he finishes up with several coats of MAC Liquid Liner and Anastasia Waterproof Crème Color.

8. Stack Your Lashes

The days of using one strip of false lashes are over and done with. To get the old school Hollywood glam look, Dedivanovic starts with a couple of coats using L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara. He then applies a mixture of long and flared individual lashes along the lash line using tweezers and a bit of black adhesive. To finish off, yet another coat of dark and rich mascara is applied.

9. Baking?!

Baking is a makeup technique that Mario insists is the key to keeping your face oil-free at all times. The makeup artist applies a thick layer of concealer underneath the eyes in the shape of an upside down triangle. Then, he blends the concealer into the skin, as well as down the bridge of the nose and at the temples. He then uses a sponge to coat the concealer with some loose powder, letting the powder ‘bake’ for a few minutes before dusting it off with a brush.

10. Chisel Your Face With Contouring

To get that svelte look Kim Kardashian is known for, contouring is Dedivanovic’s go-to. Contouring consists of applying darker powder to the hollows of the cheeks, at the sides of the nose, across the forehead and along the jawline to create a more chiseled look. The makeup artist uses bronzer to slim down Kardashian’s features, and then he brightens up her entire look with a little bit of highlighter down the bridge of her nose.
