Some traumatizing events can make you drastically change your views and habits and reevaluate your life.
36-year-old reality star, Kim Kardashian, seemed immune to that until the infamous Paris robbery from last year, when thieves stole an insane $10 million worth of jewelry from her Paris apartment. The experience made her realize that her life was too easy to track and urged her to make some changes.
The thieves, dressed as police, entered the luxury apartment on Rue Tronchet at around 2.30 am on October 3, 2016. The gang then tied Kim up and held her at gunpoint before making off with the jewelry. During the entire ordeal, Kim feared that she would get “raped and murdered” by the robbers.
The horrible event left her shaken and she basically became a whole new person in social media and in her red carpet appearances.
Here’s how the robbery changed her life forever.
1. Social media
Kim has completely changed the way she uses her social media accounts, to be more safe, of course. Social media and safety concerns were a major problem for the Kardashian clan. This was also stated in a couple of episodes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
In the investigation, the French police said that Kim’s use of Snapchat may have helped the robbers find the jewelry.
The robber said in court that the ring was basically the key part of the operation, and it kind of helped them plan the robbery.
Prior to the robbery, Kim would often post images directly from the location where she showed off her jewelry.
This was basically public knowledge.
Kim explained for the media:
“I’ve learned through experience not to post things in real time.
“I try to share my life. I definitely love doing that, but I’m a little bit more cautious these days about what I do share. I think it’s so important [to monitor social media usage.] It’s about boundaries. At home, I don’t have my phone. Dinner time, breakfast time, there’s no phone.”
2. A change in taste
Prior to the robbery, Kim used flashy and expensive outfits.
The robbery actually made her “less materialistic.”
In her first televised interview since the robbery, Kim told The Ellen DeGeneres Show:
“I was definitely materialistic before. Not that there’s anything bad with having things and working to get those things – I’m really proud of everyone around me that’s successful. And of course, when you get engaged you’re going to show off your ring. If you get a car, you feel really proud and you might show it off on social media. But I’m not here to show off the way I used to. It’s just not who I am anymore. I just don’t care about that stuff anymore. I really don’t.”
Kim was actually true to herself as she has’t worn epxensive jewelry since the robbery. This also includes her engagement ring!
The only piece of jewelry she wears now is her wedding band but this one is barely noticeable.
“They [the robbers] had been hearing interviews that I did, getting excited about this jewellery or that jewellery. And it’s not to say that I’ll never wear jewellery again, but I truly don’t know if I’d ever feel comfortable.”
3. Anxiety attacks
Kim is still experiencing anxiety over the robbery, which is in the form of traumatic flashbacks of the incidents. In one scene of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Khloé found Kim crying as she recalled the events of that night.
After that, Kim decided to see a therapist to relieve the stress and get some help.
“I know it’s time that I have to see a therapist. Because I don’t want to have these feelings and flashbacks. I’ve always been really aware of my emotions and how I’ve been feeling, and I never really thought therapy was right for me. But I also want to be responsible to my husband and kids, and do whatever I have to do to get through this and not be this crazy person that’s always scared and anxious. I don’t want to live my life like that.”
Anxiety hasn’t left her completely nowadays. A year later, Kim told T Magazine: “I definitely get a lot more anxiety now, just with people knowing your every move.”
In another interview she said:
“My whole life has changed. I never thought I would need security staying outside of my door. I should have had a security guard outside of my door. Now I have several just for me to be able to sleep at night.”
4. Family always comes first for her
The robbery made Kim reevaluate her life and made her realize what her priorities are.
Family life is her main focus now. After the robbery, she canceled all work and public appearances. She spent the next three months at home being a full-time mother to her two children.
Kim said: “Being at home for so many months and just taking work out of the equation and really being a stay at home mom has been so refreshing. I’d love to expand my family and have this whole world at home.”
Then, she returned to the social media and her photos were all family-focused.
“My whole world is my kids. It’s all I care about. From literally every last thing that they do, to what they wear, to all their activities. I love being their mom. I definitely don’t hang out with my friends as much, just because I have to be with my kids.”
