Amber and Kyle decided to have a home birth and keep the baby’s gender a secret. Even though she had two boys, Amber didn’t think she would have a daughter.
When her contractions began in December of 2013, her mom, sister-in-law, two sons, the birth photographer and the midwife gathered around her. The midwife was told to fill up the birthing pool. She rolled onto her left hip and husband Kyle massaged her back. Amber was listening to the relaxing music she had listened to her entire pregnancy.
You can see clearly that she remains very calm and didn’t edit any of the parts where she was screaming. In her labor delivery story on YouTube she says:
“I just went away. I was in another world during that whole time in the pool. My happy spot was on the beach… That’s where I went.” If counting on a pain scale, she says she was only at 2.
When her water broke, she felt a “water balloon sac” over the baby’s head, that’s because the baby was born en caul meaning it was born in the amniotic sac. This happens very rarely, fewer than 1 in 80,000 births. The rest of the delivery went as planned and fast.
“I remember moving the umbilical cord between the legs, looking down, my husband and I kind of look at each other, and I looked at my midwife,” Amber says. “And the look on her face was saying, ‘You’re not crazy. You can say it!’”
My favorite moment is when everyone finds out she’s a girl and they’re cheering for her. So beautiful.
