You know that famous photograph of a green hill and white-clouded blue sky that is always the default wallpaper when you buy a Microsoft computer? It’s called ‘Bliss’ and was taken by photographer Charles O’Rear in 1996 in Sonoma County, California. He used a medium format camera while on his way to visit his girlfriend to take the iconic photograph that is considered to be the most-viewed photo in the history of the world.

Charles was born in Missouri in 1941 and he was first acquainted with a camera, a Brownie Box when he was only 10 years old. In January 1996, he was driving through Napa and Sonoma counties and took the iconic photo, that Microsoft later purchased for their new operating system Windows XP in 2001.

“I am turning seventy-six and realize how much the Microsoft Bliss photograph has meant to my life,” O’Rear said. “As the photographer of the most viewed photo in history, I have enjoyed every minute of the fame.”

Now, 21 years later after Bliss was shot, the largest German airline Lufthansa asked the 75-year-old photographer to take tree new photo wallpapers, this time for smartphones. “I am thrilled to create for Lufthansa a sequel to ‘The Bliss’ photo on smartphones so that my views of other beautiful places can continue to be enjoyed by millions of people. After all, smartphones have become the primary place for the world to see new and interesting photography. And, I’m glad to be part of it.”
