Why do you need makeup primer?
If you don’t include primer in your makeup routine, then you are really missing out. It creates as a smooth base for foundation which will also make the makeup you apply stay on for longer.
A lot of people think they don’t really need this step but, these two beauty experts are sharing all the ins and outs of using primer and why it’s a must-have product.
Celebrity makeup artist Stephen Dimmick says that primer prepares your skin for foundation and gives it something to hold onto to last longer through the day.
A lot of makeup primers are formulated with silicone-based polymers for example, dimethicone, because of their smoothing effects. But if you struggle with cystic acne or skin problems, do a patch test to check with your doctor. Some people report allergic reactions to dimethicone too.
Physicians Formula’s makeup artist Joanna Schlip points out that primers can also help smooth any fine lines, pores or wrinkles. If you are also interested in a primer that helps to color or conceal acne spots, Joanna prefers a light green primer since it hides redness.
She told the Huffington Post: “I’d recommend pairing a primer with extra long-wear [eyeshadow or eyeliner] formulas for a look that will really stay put.”
If you have oilier eyelids, Dimmick suggests you use a mattifying eyelid primer. According to Schlip, the best way to apply this product is by using your fingertips or a brush.
“If only using for small areas, I’d recommend a brush. I like to use a concealer or lip brush for this,” she said. This spot-treat technique gives the look of a more natural finish, according to Schlip.
As for Dimmick, he considers all this process “an exercise for the face.” He also shares that applying primer onto the skin, helps “to get the blood flowing underneath.”
Schlip says that primer can save your life in extreme weather for example hot or dry temperatures, it will help your makeup last longer.
“No matter what the weather is like outside, this extra step will save you a lot of time and effort.”
