The trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is finally here and boy, it looks good! The romantic comedy musical which is set to come out in June of next year is a sequel to the 2008 film Mamma Mia and its release is scheduled for the 10th anniversary of the original film. The titles of these two British-America-Swedish co-productions are a nod to the eponymous mega-hit of Swedish pop legends’ ABBA.
The original film was adapted from the 1999 West End/2001 Broadway musical of the same name and it was based on ABBA’s songs with additional music composed by the group’s keyboardist and vocalist Benny Andersson.
The movie follows Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as she prepares to have her first child, while Lily James plays a young Donna (portrayed by Meryl Streep in the original movie) who moves to a remote island in Greece, only to find herself trapped in a complicated romantic situation involving three men. You probably recall that this resembles the plot in the original film where the men were played by Colin Firth (Harry), Pierce Brosnan (Bill), and Jeremy Irvine (young Sam).
The trailer features a slow, Acapella version of the song which was released as the opening song on ABBA’s eponymous third album in 1975. Some Twitter users pointed out that the only negative about the trailer is that it doesn’t have enough Streep.
Judging by it, by the time Sophie is pregnant with her first child, Donna had already passed away. Aside from that, the movie has all the other elements of the original film: love, music and plot twists. Harry Potter lovers will find it especially enjoyable as it also features Julie Walters who played Mrs. Weasley in the famous series based on the seven J.K. Rowling novels.
