A 36-year-old Ryan Collins from Lancaster, Pennsylvania was jailed for 18 months for hacking celebrity accounts and stealing nude photos and videos.
Ryan pleaded guilty to illegally accessing the accounts of more than 600 people, including Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Upton and Rihanna, but he was not charged with releasing the images, the BBC reports.
The 36-year-old hacker sent phishing emails for two years. Between 2012 and 2014 the emails he sent appeared to be from Apple or Google, to get usernames and passwords. The investigation revealed that Ryan gained access to at least 50 Apple iCloud accounts and 72 Gmail accounts. Many of those belonged to famous women.
The sickening intrusion of privacy became known to the public as ‘the fappening’ when dozens of celebrity videos and nude images appeared online.
In November 2014 Jennifer Lawrence told Vanity Fair: “Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this.”
“It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting.”
Ryan Collins was initially facing up to five years jail time for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. He accepted a smaller sentence as part of a plea deal for admitting his guilt.
