It still feels like it was yesterday when tragedy struck on the night of 1 October at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. A gunman opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers and left 58 people dead and 546 injured. Among all the horrible photos and videos taken during the shooting, there is one of a man trying to protect a woman by shielding her with his body. The photo went viral, and we now know the man in the picture is U.S. Army soldier Matthew Cobos.
As the 64-year-old Stephen Paddock rained bullets down on the innocent country music fans, people started panicking. However, Cobos remained calm and tackled a woman to the ground in an attempt to save her life.
Cobos’ military training obviously helped, as the photo shows him covering the woman’s eyes so that she does not see what is going on around her. When the photo was first shared online, no one knew who the man was, but after the entire world saw his heroic deed, Cobos revealed his identity.
This is his story.
Moments after the photo was taken, Cobos took the woman behind a nearby car where they asked for further protection. After rescuing the woman, the soldier used his belt as a tourniquet to help curb the bleeding other victims were experiencing. Moreover, he used his fingers to block bullet holes and prevent bleeding. A true hero, indeed! After the nightmarish country concert, Cobos told his close relatives and friends how he heard bullets whizzing over his head: it seems like Paddock was aiming for him, but luckily, the hero was not hit.
The image of Cobos understandably stirred emotions online. Here are a few comments shared on MailOnline.
“To him and anyone else who showed bravery of the highest level that night, medals of honor should be given. And knowing Trump, I bet he will be happy to do it,” one user wrote.
Here is what another had to say:
“I’ve been worried about these two… thought they were a couple… he is a brave and lovely person… and a credit to his unit and his country… and he deserves a medal… So very, very, very happy to know they both got out alive and safe.”
Another person reminded people who the real heroes are:
“Not all young people are bad, as an example of this selfless courageous international hero! This young man deserves true accolade for his incredible bravery, so never mind all these celebrities getting awards for play acting!!!”
