Back in 1988, British author, Roald Dahl, published a book called Matilda. This novel told the story of a young girl whose family mistreated her. After years of this abuse, she starts playing pranks on her family. Then, she realizes that she actually has powers verging onmagical.

Children and parents everywhere loved the story of Matilda. In 1996, Danny DeVito adapted the book into a feature film starring the cute 9-year-old Mara Wilson as Matilda.

Mara appeared in Mrs.Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street previously, where she became a huge star. For many years people saw her face and Matilda was the first thing they thought about.

But her personal life wasn’t perfect. After filming wrapped on Matilda, her mom lost her battle with cancer.

Being a kid, Mara loved reading, and her mom read Matilda to her before the role came up. She encouraged her to play the part because she thought that Matilda was a very strong character.

She didn’t know how important Denny DeVito would be in her life when he offered her the role. He and his wife invited her over to pool parties and events and Mara remembers always having a blast while working with the seasoned actors.

On March 10, 1995 while she was filming, her mom Suzie got diagnosed with breast cancer. Danny and Rhea watched Mara every time her parents needed to go to the hospital.

Just after the filming wrapped, Suzie’s condition got worse. She passed away on April 26, 1996. Mara and her family were devastated and she explains that in her new memoir, Where Am I Now?

Suzie passed away before the post-production was finished so she never was able to see the completed film.

Or so Mara thought. She got so upset that her mom never got to see the movie, but that actually wasn’t the case.

Years fter Suzie passed away, Danny told Mara that he visited her at the hospital with the almost-completed film and let her watch it. This act gave Mara a peace of mind. Her mother had seen a project she had been so proud of.

Even though Danny played a horrible father in Matilda, he proved once again that he is a very warmhearted man.
