Ever since it was officially announced that Prince Harry is going to marry American actress Meghan Markle, the online community has been buzzing with questions. When is the wedding? Will Prince William be Harry’s best man? Will Kate Middleton be able to attend the wedding? Some of them have been answered. For example, it was recently revealed that the date of the wedding has been set for May 19, 2018. By penciling it for a Saturday, a royal tradition has been broken as this will be the first wedding in the British royal family taking place on a weekend.
The next question of most people’s lips now is who is going to be Meghan Markle’s maid of honor? A few names seem to have come up amid the speculations.
Who will be the one?
Among the celebrities rumored to be in the running to fulfill this role are tennis legend Serena Williams, and Millie Mackintosh, the former Made In Chelsea socialite and rapper Professor Green’s ex-wife. However, one person who, according to the gossip columns and ‘sources close to Meghan’, is most likely to be the maid of honor is Priyanka Chopra.
Priyanka Chopra is an Indian actress and former Miss World, who went from Bollywood to Hollywood winning the admiration and conquering the hearts of millions of fans both with her acting talent and her outspokenness in the pursuit of gender equality.
The 35-year old philanthropist was born in Jamshedpur, in the northeastern Indian state of Bihar. She starred in the thriller series Quantico, thus becoming the first South Asian to play the lead role in an American drama series. More recently, Chopra appeared alongside Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in the Baywatch movie.
Chopra and Markle: a real power couple
Meghan Markle and Priyanka Chopra apparently met at a party in Toronto, where the American was shooting the legal drama series Suits. The two actresses apparently got on like a house on fire and haven’t stopped socializing since. Chopra was also among the first to congratulate Meghan and Harry when their engagement was first announced. India Times offers their frequent social media exchanges as proof of their friendship, and claims there are reports according to which Priyanka will indeed be the one to walk down the aisle as Meghan’s maid of honor.
The two ladies have more in common than their stunning looks and their choice of career. They are both also very much involved in promoting gender equality and are no strangers when it comes to charity work. Markle is a UN women’s advocate for Political Participation and Leadership, and Chopra a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Fighting the good fight
Priyanka, who was named one of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women in 2017 by Forbes, discussed gender issues in Hollywood with Entertainment Tonight:
“Well, first of all, just to take a step back, women had had to choose what they wanna make because parts are not written in Hollywood or entertainment. We’re so far behind, I mean we just had Wonder Woman, which is our first big major female superhero movie directed by a female. We’ve just had one director that’s ever won an Academy Award who is female ever in the history of entertainment. I mean, come on!”
She continued, “I’m digging my feet in and not gonna settle ever. Because it’s gonna take people like me, like a lot of other women out there, to make it easier for the next generation where they don’t have to feel like, ‘Oh, there are no parts written for us. We always have to stand behind the guy.’ We have to create parts for ourselves because nobody else is gonna do it.”
A woman in her own right
Taking her strong views into consideration, it’s no surprise that the Indian beauty had some choice words for the Vanity Fair cover story which featured her good friend Markle but mostly focused on her relationship with the Prince.
Chopra said, “It would have been nice to write about her not just her boyfriend. I’m just saying. I mean, she’s an actor, she’s an activist, she’s a philanthropist. I mean, she does so much more. It’s just a little sexist. Look, I’m a feminist and I love boys, okay… The only thing I’m saying is that there needs to be a certain sense of equality where a woman is not just a plus one, you know. It’s nice to be your own identity too.”
Markle herself said, “I’ve never defined myself by my relationship,” but her statement apparently fell on deaf ears as that is exactly what that Vanity Fair story tried to do.
Whether or not Chopra is going to be Markle’s maid of honor or not remains to be seen. There are also rumors that the 36-year-old had asked Kate Middleton to fill this role via a note included in a gift that she presented to the Duchess of Cambridge. Suffice to say, there have been no official announcements in regards to this vital question.
