Singer Miley Cyrus was a strange phenomenon for a while. Years ago, she was a constant source of controversy due to the change she made from a cute American sweetheart to the edgy heroine of the rebels of her generation. But the Miley we all knew back then, seems to have undergone a serious turnaround. Coming back in the public realm last year, she looked a whole lot more like her old self. You know, with her long locks and a more “modest” look.
Now, Miley is much more toned down becoming also an outspoken campaigner for feminism and LGBT rights. She also performed a few Hannah Montana songs at some recent gigs. She is back y’all.
During a short interview on The Late Late Show’s Carpool Karaoke segment, she explained why she moved on from the twerking days and how she came to terms with who she is and where she’s from.
The host of the show, James Corden, asked the “Malibu” singer what she changed the most in her life since the unforgettable moment at the VMA’s. She responded:
“It’s funny you mention the VMAs. The first VMAs in 2013, with the twerking and Robin Thicke, has led me to being the activist that I am now. Because I realised that if so many people were going to talk about something that I did, or I do, then I should make it a good thing. Something that can change people’s lives rather than being a controversial conversation that does nothing but become a fun Halloween costume for people.”
She also revealed that she fought in the past to escape her Hannah Montana image, but now she has come to terms with who she was in her life.
“There was something when I first stopped doing Hannah Montana when I was saying: “I’m not that, I want you to know who I really am.” But I love that that was me, and is me, and is still a part of me. I’ve allowed that childhood self to shine through a little bit more because I’m not trying to run away from it, and I’m down to embrace it. I think everyone should embrace who they used to be, because it’s made you who you are now.”
While we’re young, we often try new looks and attitudes, but Miley was trying all of these things in the public eye. She definitely upgraded her latest self and we’re so happy to see her comfortable in her own skin.
