This South Sudanese model is here to stlay (pun intended)!
Her name is Nyakim Gatwech, and she is taking the internet by storm. She is teaching people not to be afraid of the dark. Literally.
Gatwech is breaking down all barriers of conventional beauty as she rocks a deeply pigmented skin and fierce determination to encourage others to do exactly the same.
Nyakim who is 24 years old, now lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she always tries to raise awareness that dark skin is beautiful too.
Her Instagram photos almost always receive 10 thousand likes each. In one of her Instagram photos, she captioned, “My chocolate is elegant. So is what I represent… A nation of warriors”.
In another photo, the model explains an experience she had with her Uber driver, where he suggested that she should try ‘bleaching’ her skin, to what she responded with laughter.
The model said, “You won’t believe the kind of questions I get and the kind of looks I get for having this skin.”
Nyakim is not only an advocate for diversity in the fashion industry, but she is also a human advocate for Black right across the world.
She has even been nicknamed “Queen of the Dark”, a title she is happy to be given.
“Black is bold, black is beautiful, black is gold… Don’t let American standards damage your African soul. Love the skin you live in, no matter what color or shade it may be!”, said the model.
The 24-year-old model is now taking the fashion industry by storm exactly due to her dark skin which looks beautiful.
But her unique beauty wasn’t always celebrated and admired by everyone before she became a successful model.
Her Uber driver suggested she bleach her skin, claiming that she would look much better with lighter skin.
But Nyakim simply brushed off the comments with laughter as she is confident and loves her appearance.
Flawless! Keep doing you boo!
This beautiful model apart from her career is also an encouragement for the Black community
In one of her photos, she captioned, “You are beyond beautiful and the love I have for you is unconditional because you are me,”
“Let’s show the world how beautiful and intelligent we are apart from just being dark-skinned”
She has since gone viral with over 100 thousand followers on Instagram
And here’s why:
Although she still received negative comments every now and then, they can’t really outshine her radiant self-love
The “Queen of the Dark” is truly a kween.
“My skin absorbs the suns rays and my hair defies gravity. Now you can’t tell me I’m not magical!”
