Being a mother of teenagers is far from an easy job. Teenagers have so many crazy ideas just in one day! They either love or hate makeup, for instance.
Dawn Williams, a mother-of-two was absolutely devastated when her teenage kids would tell her how bad she looks on the outside. In 2010, Dawn had a look that even she described as “pretty overdone.” The then, 44-year-old underwent an astonishing makeover on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Nowadays, she is a completely new person, with some old habits as well.
The mother-of-two had spent two decades perfecting her appearance with breast implants, bleach-blonde hair extensions, a sparkling nose ring and thick layers of makeup. Her favorite makeup ritual was putting on layers of pink lipstick. Although she felt sexy and comfortable with her look, the Canadian mom from Alberta was willing to tone it down for the sake of her teenage children.
“I am a mother, first and foremost,” Williams said back then. “I would really like for both my daughter and my son to be proud of me.”
As her kids were unhappy with her looks, they decided to contact Oprah to give their mom a classy makeover. Oprah sent in Carson Kressley, style expert for OWN, to help her with her style. Then, Carson Kressley joined up with The Oprah Winfrey Show.
When Carson first arrived at Dawn’s house, she confessed that she was building this look for 20 years. Carson wanted to make clear wasn’t that her style wasn’t wrong. He wanted Dawn to feel happy in her own skin.
He asked Dawn to look into the mirror and tell him what she saw. Her response was pretty heartbreaking.
“I see someone who…has a lot of makeup on and somebody that is pretty overdone,” Dawn said. “I don’t think that my kids are very happy with what they see. You know? They see somebody that’s supposed to be a role model for them and they would really like to just have a mom, just like everybody else’s mom.”
Then, the style expert completely took away her caked-on makeup and everything else. Instead, he left her with a classy, beautiful look.
On the day of the big reveal, Oprah brought Dawn’s kids on the show to see their “new” mom.
The big reveal was jaw-dropping. Williams appeared on stage in a flattering wrap dress while sporting a sassy shoulder-length cut and beautiful, fresh-faced makeup. Her kids looked absolutely ecstatic by the new look. But did she stick with it?
A few years after that show, she admitted to Oprah: Where Are They Now? that she had actually reverted back to her old look. As a matter of fact, it made her feel a “much happier” and more like herself. Her life has changed completely since then, and she has had some ups and downs in her life.
Williams is now a married woman, having wed a man named Troy in an elaborate celebration in 2013. “[It] was, in my eyes, the most beautiful Cinderella wedding that anyone could have,” Williams says. The family is now bigger, too. “I have also adopted a son. His name is Johnny,” she says.
Together with her family and close friends, Williams also celebrated a milestone birthday. “I just turned 50, for crying out loud!” she says. “We went down to Cancun and had a fabulous time.”
It wasn’t all good in her life though. Williams also experienced a terrifying ordeal that put her in the hospital fighting for her life.
“About a year ago, I had an accident,” she says. “I was in Nashville, Tennessee, for my cousin’s wedding. I fell down some stairs and ended up on life support.”
Luckily, she survived and recovered, but the incident has given her a totally new perspective on life.
“I have come to see life in a… more respectful way,” she says. “We have just so little time here, and I’m just so very, very blessed that my life was saved.”
