According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. These affect more than 40 million adults in the U.S. aged 18 and older, which is 18.1% of the population. Although such disorders are highly treatable, only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment. Suffering from an anxiety disorder is associated with feelings of panic and fear and many of those affected feel too isolated to seek help. Luckily for those dealing with this issue, however, a song has been created that helps with anxiety disorders. Thanks to music therapy, you can now relieve stress and reduce anxiety.
One British doctor believes to have found a solution to anxiety. Here is the whole story.
How did anxiety become so common? Psychologists believe that the rise of technology, overly-protective parenting and “exam factory” schooling are the ones to blame for these worrying trends.
It’s because people grow very insecure about those three things. Here is a simple example. Getting good grades is a constant pressure in relation to getting a good job in the future, which we know it’s not entirely true. This frustrates people a lot.
Psychologists also believe that giving people the freedom of choice also plays an affect. It’s about the fact that society is watching every single move we make. People are constantly pressured to make the “right decision”, fearing the future outcome.
So how do we fight anxiety? Some medical professionals believe that the key is good medication, while others think counseling is the best option. It’s important to note that the pharmaceutical industries thrive off people suffering from anxiety. As a matter of fact, 65% of the North American population is taking prescription medication daily and 43% are taking mood regulators on a regular basis.
One of the methods that proved effective is music therapy. Neuroscientists in the UK say they have found the perfect song for those who suffer from anxiety.
According to Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson of Mindlab International, a company that has been providing neuromarketing solutions to clients from fields ranging from public relations through advertising to political communications since 2005, the song increased the relaxation in people who heard it. The results are based on a study they conducted.
The name of the song is Weightless and it was created by English musical trio Marconi Union. Interestingly, the song had such a good impact on people, that Dr. Lewis-Hodgson had to instruct them not to listen to it while driving.
Ambiental band Marconi Union created the song in collaboration with sound therapists. The song slows the heart rate, reduces the blood pressure and lowers your levels of stress. Talk about a triple threat!
