Paris Hilton Claims To Be The Inventor Of The Selfie, But This Phenomenon Is Older Than You Think

02

One of the biggest trends on social media is definitely taking and uploading selfies. It has been popular for quite a while now, and it sure as hell isn’t going away, but do you know who was the first person to ever snap a picture of themselves?

Well, according to Paris Hilton the inventor of the selfie was none other than… you guessed it: Paris Hilton! She doesn’t take sole credit for the invention, though. The American heiress and reality TV star is more than willing to admit that her co-inventor was, in fact, Britney Spears.

Hilton took us on a Throwback Sunday yesterday, November 19, when she tweeted the first two selfies in the history of photography. At least that is what the 36-year-old claims, as she captioned the photo “11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!”

The people’s protest

While Britney Spears hasn’t yet confirmed nor denied that those two photos taken way back in 2006 are truly a historic moment, Hilton’s post has gotten over 47 thousand retweets as of Monday afternoon. Almost all of the people commenting are, however, disputing the socialite’s claim, and posting photographs that prove that the world’s first selfie was taken way before Hilton’s time. Even as far back as the early 1800s.

The metaphorical interpretation

There was another theory circling the Twittersphere as well. Some people thought that Paris Hilton was way deeper than most were giving her credit for. In fact, this minority of Tweeters believes that Hilton didn’t mean ‘invented’ in the literal sense of the word, but that she was actually making a joke or being sarcastic.

A child prodigy

Anyway, whatever theory you choose to believe, it may be of some significance to mention that this isn’t even the first time that Hilton has laid a claim on the invention of the selfie. Back in May, she told W Magazine, “If a beeper had a camera, I would have taken a selfie with it. I think I have a selfie from when I was a little kid, like on a disposable camera.”

One other celebrity who can also lay a claim on inventing a modern version of the selfie is English actor Rowan Atkinson, whose famous character Mr. Bean was taking (albeit unsuccessful) selfies with an instant-print camera in the early 1990s.

Speaking of the legendary actor who brought us Edmund Blackadder and Johnny English, he became a father once again at the age of 62 just the other day; click here to find out more.
