Most Popular Baby Names In The US By State

The Social Security Administration recently released their annual list of most popular baby names in the country, and Noah and Emma topped the list in 2016. Noah has been the most popular boy name since 2013, while Emma has been the No. 1 girl name since 2014. It looks like the names are similar for both boys and girls no matter where you live in the United States.

The Social Security Administration has published the list since 1997, but the agency’s popular names lists going back several decades are available.

Let’s take a look at these state-by-state maps to see the national breakdown. So Emma is the most popular name for girls, and the other top names are Olivia, Ava, Sophia and Isabella. You can see how some of them are prevalent in certain regions of the country.

And here’s the map for the boys. The most popular name in 2016 was Noah, followed by William, Liam, Mason and James to round out the top five.

The Social Security Administration also included a list of the most improved names, i.e. the ones with biggest leaps in popularity between 2015 and 2016. Kylo made the biggest leap among boys, from No. 3269 to No. 901, while Kehlani had the highest rise in popularity for the girls, from No. 3359 to No. 872.

If you’re expecting a baby soon, you can jump on the bandwagon and use one of these super-popular names, or something more unique and unusual like Amaryllis or Honesti for girls, and Coyote and Tavish for boys.
