While a lot of people attended this year’s Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Johanna String, a photographer, had something else on her mind. She was taking pictures of strangers before and after kissing them.
The Norwegian artist based in New York, turned these shots into a series named “Kiss A Stranger.” Through this series she’s trying to make a transformative and meaningful connection with strangers.
She told i-D: “By creating new relationships and learning about the thoughts and ideas of strangers, we might be able to build bridges and combat ignorance and judgement.”
Johanna would approach her subject no matter the gender or race and after she took the first portrait she would explain her idea before kissing them. People immediately drop their created roles and become themselves. And there might also be a biological explanation to this:
“Kissing sparks all the nerve endings in your lips,” Johanna explains, “causing a release of dopamine and a surge in oxytocin. It’s an instantaneous stress reliever and creates an immediate emotional bond between two people.”
