When you think of some of the most important members of the UK Royal Family, you can’t go without mentioning Princess Diana.
This July, Princess Diana would have turned 56, but the accident at the Dauphine Tunnel in Paris in 1997 meant that Princess Diana died on August 31st that same year at the age of 36.
Diana was famous for her charity work and being, in general, a down to Earth person. She was also the wife of Prince Charles with whom she had two children, those being Prince Harry and Prince William.
Here are some facts about the late Princess that you may not know.
1. Princess Diana and Prince Charles
The reason these two met was because of Diana’s sister, Sarah, who dated him before but a break in the relationship where Sarah claimed she was not in love with him opened the floodgates for Diana, and the rest is history.
2. She really seemed to like Prince Charles
Unlike her sister. She even had a picture of him above her bed at boarding school.
3. She was 16-years-old when she met Charles
He was 28 at the time, and according to Vogue magazine, she was absolutely thrilled about meeting him and told her music teacher about it.
4. They started dating two years later, when Diana was 18 and Charles was 30
5. The proposal
Prince Charles popped the question on February 6, 1981, but they kept their engagement a secret for a couple of weeks.
6. Her engagement ring
To call this thing insane would be an understatement. It featured 14 solitaire diamonds that surrounded a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire which was set in 18-carat white gold, but strangely, it wasn’t custom made and was instead purchased from a catalogue.
7. Wedding dress
Meanwhile the dress was adorned with more than 10,000 tiny pearl sequins and pearls, the train was (and still is) the longest in royal history; 25 feet!
Unfortunately, Princess Diana isn’t around today, but if she was this is the most accurate representation of what she would look like.
9. Her children’s education
Instead of the normal private tutors and governesses schooling her children, the Princess insisted that Prince William attend nursery school in London.
10. Normal upbringing
Princess Diana would strive for her children to have the most normal upbringing, but in special cases, she would do things that weren’t exactly normal. For example, when Prince William was 13, he had a crush on Cindy Crawford and she was therefore invited to the palace for dinner.
11. A casual approach to her personal chef
According to the man himself, Darren McGrady, she had a very casual and nice approach to how she treated her staff. ‘She would say, Darren, I need a coffee. Oh, you’re busy. I’ll make it. Do you want one?’ Darren stated.
12. The divorce
They divorced on August 28th, 1996 (one year and 3 days before she passed) with a settlement of 17 million pounds and 400,000 pounds a year.
13. Speaking terms
These two were reportedly not on speaking terms by the time of the Princess’ death.
14. Member of the family
Despite her death, Buckingham Palace has stated that she was still a member of the Royal Family, as she was the mother of the second and third in line to the throne.
15. The death
Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997, along with Dodi Fayed and Henri Paul who were in the car at the time.
