The Reason Why Los Angeles Is Painting The Streets White Has Nothing To Do With Traffic

While some try to deny that the climate is changing, others have already started deal with it. It happens so often that we are totally unaware of the consequences of our actions, unless we see terrifying pictures of how much has our planet changed. This was all due to our irresponsibility, but, luckily, many cities are doing a lot to raise awareness and help in some way.  The residents of Los Angeles are among them, and now they’re looking for some ‘outside the box’ ideas to fight the unbearable heat. Temperatures have reached 130-140 degrees on the road’s surface in the past year, and this is more than concerning. The city has started a pilot project to test out the “cool pavement.” The streets have gone white!

The streets have gone white!

This small-scale project was a great idea to cool down the city area, because, this summer, the weather was scorching! LA covered 15 streets with asphalt-based paint-like substance to cool down the streets by about 11-13 degrees Fahrenheit.

This initiative means that the buildings around the streets also cool down.

Some people still think this is not a lot, but Environmental Protection Agency gave an important statement.

In their report, they say that if 35% of LA’s streets were covered with a reflective surface like this, it would translate into a 1-degree drop in temperature throughout the city. And this is not all! This will result in around $100 million per year in energy savings.

This is just one step toward a brighter future for all of us. It is a truly small, but innovative idea that can help cities in the long term. And that’s not even mentioning how cool it looks!
