Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is a method of alternative medicine which involves applying pressure to the hands and feet to produce an effect elsewhere in the body.

It origins can be traced back to China and Egypt and also science remains unconvinced of its effects, numerous people claim to have benefited greatly when using its methods. However, the spots where pressure needs to be applied as well as the length of application need to be known precisely for the procedure to work.

In the video below, the idea that our feet and hands are a microcosm of our bodies is explained by Deborah Flanagan, reflexologist and founder of Center for True Health. When appearing on the Dr. Oz Show, Flanagan invited five audience members to share the physical issues they struggle with. She then proceeds to connect issues such as constipation and bloating, exhaustion, insomnia, sinus troubles, back pain and poor sex drive to particular points in people’s palms. She also demonstrates how applying different types of pressure and massage to certain points of the palm can bring relief and make the pain disappear over time.

Treated as pseudoscience by traditional medicine on one hand, while lauded by a significant number of practitioners, the debate on reflexology continues. In 2009, a systematic review of trials determined that “the best evidence available to date does not demonstrate convincingly that reflexology is an effective treatment for any medical condition.”

On the other hand, zone therapy remains a popular form of alternative therapy in some parts of the world. A national survey from 2005 showed that 21.4% of the Danish population had used reflexology at some point in life and 6.1% had used reflexology within the previous year. A study from Norway showed that 5.6% of the Norwegian population in 2007 had used reflexology within the last 12 months.
