Hollywood couples are shiny, happy, and successful. Some last for a long time, giving us hope for finding the right one, like these, for instance. This couple is probably one of the most enduring of them all. 73-year-old Sam Elliot and 77-year-old Katherine Ross are the epitomes of beautiful love and successful celebrity marriage. A lot happened in Katherine’s life before she finally met her right one. She had to marry four times before she finally settled for Sam.
The actors met in 1978 and they have been married for 33 years now. Katherine’s fifth marriage proved to be the charm for her.
Ross, 77, is best known for her iconic roles as Elaine Robinson in The Graduate (1967), Etta Place in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Her previous short marriages were to Joel Fabiani (1960-1962), John Marion (1964-1967), Conrad L. Hall (1969-1974), and Gaetano Lisi (1974-1979).
Katherine’s husband Elliott, 73, is well-known known for his bushy mustache as well as for his cowboy, biker, and military characters. He currently stars in the Netflix series The Ranch. He’s also known for roles in the film The Big Lebowski, and the television series Justified (2015).
Ross and Elliott met in 1978 while filming the horror movie The Legacy in London. They played guests terrorized at a creepy English estate. Actually, Elliott had a small role in Butch Cassidy a decade earlier, but he and Ross didn’t meet on set. “I didn’t dare try to talk to her then. She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene,” Elliott told AARP The Magazine in 2015.
The two apparently saw a lot more of each other while making Legacy. Ros told The Mercury News about what attracted her to Sam, whether it was his baritone voice, rugged good looks, or mustache. “Probably all that and more. We were working together and one thing led to another. And here we are.”
Ross divorced in 1979 and married Elliott in 1984. Cleo Rose, their daughter, who is now a musician, was born later that year.
The couple appeared together on screen again this year. Elliott stars in The Hero as a Western film icon, while Ross plays his character’s ex-wife. They also have some future projects coming. Elliott will appear in A Star is Born in 2018, while Ross is starring in the comedy Attachments.
They move between their homes in California and Oregon. As Elliott told AARP, marriage is work that’s really worth it. “We have a common sensibility, but we also work at being together,” he said. “You work past the sh*t; you don’t walk away from it. That’s how relationships last.”
