Seth MacFarlaine Admits Harvey Weinstein Joke At 2013 Oscars Was Actually Personal

joke

It seems like there is not a single fleeting moment at the Oscars that is not caught on camera and remembered for a lifetime. In the not-so-distant 2013, the then-host comedian and actor Seth MacFarlane, 43, made a seemingly carefree joke about the now infamous actions of producer Harvey Weinstein, 65, but he has now revealed it was more than a casual joke. It meant something deeper to a friend of his, 37-year-old actress Jessica Barth. MacFarlane shared his thought in an emotional Twitter post on Wednesday, October 11.

In January 2013, MacFarlane was joined by actress Emma Stone to unveil the Academy Awards nominees. After reading the five actresses in the Supporting Actress category, MacFarlane joked: “Congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein.” It turns out, the joke about the producer’s reputation for making moves on actresses had a deeply personal resonance.

Last week, The New York Times ran a report that revealed multiple allegations of sexual harassment against Weinstein which led to the resignation of four members of The Weinstein Company, while he himself was also fired by the board.

The Family Guy creator has now revealed that the joke was a way of him to stand up to Weinstein. It happened after his friend, actress Jessica Barth, who co-starred in MacFarlane’s Ted movies, told him about her harrowing 2011 experience with Weinstein when the 65-year-old producer sexually harassed the actress in his hotel room. The encounter was revealed after the exposé on the disgraced producer.

Part of McFarlane’s tweet reads: “I couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a hard swing in his direction. Make no mistake, this came from a place of loathing and anger. There is nothing more abhorrent and indefensible than abuse of power such as this.”

Now, like many other celebrities, he’s speaking out against Weinstein and telling women to speak up. Weinstein, on the other hand, denied all the accusations.
