Like all the parts of our body, the breasts deserve some special extra care too.
If you thought you’ve heard and seen it all when it comes to Kim Kardashian, did you know that the reality TV star duct tapes her breasts when appearing at red carpet events?
“Um, not a good idea,” says dermatologist Bruce Katz, MD, Director of the JUVA Skin & Laser Center in New York City.
Here are some other things you shouldn’t be doing to your breasts either, courtesy of Health.
1. Duct taping them
Kim has shared her breast hack on her web page: “I’ve used everything from duct tape to packing tape to masking tape and I think that the best I found is gaffer’s tape. It sticks the best!”
Dr.Katz warns: “It can irritate your skin and cause a rash, especially around your nipples, which are particularly sensitive.”
Also, according to Dr. Katz, not only you could develop an allergy to substances, but also end up breaking out in eczema.
2. Botoxing them
After injecting the chest with Botox, it is back muscles that take most of the brunt, as it is them that are holding the breasts up. Additionally, according to research from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in addition to being really expensive, Botox procedures on the female bosom do not actually work.
Alexes Hazen, a plastic surgeon at NYU Langone Medical Center, says: “It also does nothing to address sagging skin, which contributes to drooping.”
The expert also warns against injecting facial fillers like Resylane into breasts: “We don’t have any data about the safety,” says Dr. Hazen.
3. Waxing nipple hairs
Of course, you can have you nipples hairs waxed off, but why? The treatment can cause you irritation and ingrown hairs. Electrolysis is not a good option, either. Simply tweezing them occasionally is better, while going for laser hair removal is an even better option, according to Dr.Katz.
4. Running in a yoga bra
As comfortable as yoga bras can be, they actually don’t offer your breasts the right support they need. Running in this bra breaks down the connective tissue in your chest, causing sagging. According to a study from the University of Portsmouth, England, breasts can bounce up to eight inches while running. Instead, you should choose a bra that is actually designed for this type of workout.
5. Piercing your nipples
Many people, including some celebrities like Rihanna, proudly show off their nipple rings. Be careful, though, as according to a University of Iowa study, this increases the risk of developing an abscess, a painful, pus-filled infection-tenfold. Also, it can be destructive to the milk production ducts.
“Some women are allergic to the metal used for the piercing or in the ring itself, which can cause a severe rash,” warns Dr.Katz. Plus, if the place is not properly disinfected, it can increase the risk of contracting hepatitis B or C or even HIV.
