707 Pound Teen With Hormonal Issues Loses Half Of His Weight And Is Battling Obesity In The Bravest Way

According to the Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009–2010, more than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of adults in the United States are considered to be overweight or obese. The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. Today, about one in five school-aged children (ages 6–19) is considered obese. Obesity can occur due to different factors, and sometimes it can be due to hormonal issues. Children often take after their parents genetically and in their eating habits, so it’s no wonder for some to be obese like them.

Some of them try very hard to lose weight, but few have good results. This was the case with Jacob Miller, who weighed in at 707 pounds at a height of 6’5″when he was 15. His story went viral two years ago after his successful surgery, but the Internet cannot forget him.

Jacob has been dealing with his weight since he was one year old. At that early age, he weighed in at a shocking 52 lbs. Jacob was actually born prematurely, and if he had been carried to term, he would have weighed nearly 12 pounds at birth. Which is absolutely unbelievable.

Doctors thought that Jacob had some sort of hormonal problem, which caused extreme amounts of weight gain. As he was reaching his teenage years, Jacob was gaining an average 100 pounds every year, which meant poor health and few friends for him.

Jacob was often the target of verbal abuse and he quickly became depressed. He was also suffering from diabetes, cellulitis on his legs, heart disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. These are all related to obesity and they all become debilitating as time goes on.

But he became aware that his excess weight could possibly end his life, so he decided to start losing some weight. He sought help from the right people which was the first step to success.

After he talked to the professionals at the  Cincinatti Children’s Hospital, Jacob made a plan to lose the weight.

Doctors opted for a gastric bypass surgery to help him lose weight faster. Gastric Bypass is a procedure where doctors surgically shrink the stomach to reduce its capacity and create a feeling of being “full” after eating a fraction of the food one would consume before the surgery. The procedure took 3.5 hours and it was unsuccessful, although this was only the beginning.

Even before the surgery, Jacob lost 77 pounds just by changing his diet and lifestyle.

He also started exercising. His grandfather used his late grandmother’s final social security check to buy Jacob a YMCA membership.

Jacob got the most support from his parents, who cheered his progress every time he stepped on the scale. They decided to take him out of the school where he was constantly bullied and placed him into a more accepting school environment.

After 12 months, Jacob was half his of his previous size. He lost over 150 lbs in one year.

Hard work paid off in the end.

Next, dates and prom were on the to-do list. And he did it. Jacob met a whole group of friends at his new school. That also helped him get this date.

Life has definitely improved for Jason and he now finds some things much easier than before the surgery.

The hospital gave its most recent update on his life on the YouTube video below, commenting:

“Jacob is in his first year of college and is studying to be a vet tech. Weight loss is still a struggle, and he says he has a hard time finding time to work out and eat healthy on a limited budget. He has discovered that there is no magic trick for losing weight. It’s a constant battle.”

His story is indeed inspiring and worth watching. Here you can hear him talking about his stuggle:
