Then And Now: The Stars Of Harry Potter

The Harry Potter franchise is easily one of the most popular movie series of all time. It all began in 2001 with the release of the first installment Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Based on J. K. Rowling’s novels of the same title, the movie was an instant hit, and over the next ten years seven more were made, culminating with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). The story about The Boy Who Lived and his two faithful sidekicks, Ron and Hermione, has gone straight into our hearts and it’s there to stay.

Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born on July 23, 1989, in London, England. His first role was in BBC television film David Copperfield in 1999. Apart from movies, like the sci-fi Victor Frankenstein (2015), and comedy-drama Swiss Army Man (2016), he has starred in many theatre productions, including the Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Radcliffe has also received recognition for his charitable work.

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris, France. The role of Hermione was her first professional acting job. Since then she has worked on numerous films, including epic biblical drama Noah (2014) alongside Russell Crowe, and the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (2017), where she played the lead character. Watson’s efforts for promoting women’s rights has earned her the title of UN Women Goodwill ambassador.

Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint was born on August 24, 1988, in Essex, England. Before his breakout role in Harry Potter, he had performed only in school plays and local theaters. Outside of the Harry Potter franchise, he has collaborated with Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt on the comedy Wild Target (2010), and has even done a bit of voice acting in Postman Pat: The Movie (2014).

Thomas Andrew Felton was born on September 22, 1987, in Epsom, England. He first started acting in commercials at the age of 8. Felton starred in the critically acclaimed period drama Belle (2013), and had a recurring role on CW series The Flash (2014).  He is also a musician and has released a few singles.

Helena Bonham Carter was born on May 26, 1966, in Islington, London. She started her extremely successful career in 1986 with the role of the title character in Lady Jane, and has since started in a great number of popular movies, such as Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Dark Shadows (2012), and Alice in Wonderland (2010). In 2012, she was was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to drama.

Anthony Robert McMillan was born on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Besides his role in Harry Potter, he is known for his roles in two James Bond movies: Golden Eye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999).

7.  Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy)

Jason Isaacs was born on June 6, 1963, in Liverpool, England. He graduated from law school before becoming an actor. Since then he has had numerous roles, some of which were in historical fiction The Patriot (2000), Netflix supernatural series The OA (2016), and currently he is portraying Captain Gabriel Lorca in Star Trek: Discovery.

Bonnie Francesca Wright was born on February 17, 1991, in London, England. She worked on the British-Irish drama The Sea (2013), and made her stage debut the same year in The Moment of Truth.

Dame Margaret Natalie Smith was born on the December 28, 1934, in Essex, England. She began her career of more than sixty years in 1952. She is one of the most recognisable British actresses, having appeared in more than 50 movies. She has won two Academy Awards, and was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990.

10. James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley)

James Andrew Eric Phelps and Oliver Martyn John Phelps are identical twins born on February 25, 1986, in Birmingham, England. The two decided to audition for Harry Potter even though they hadn’t acted before, and even though going on the audition meant skipping a school exam. In 2013, they currently split their time between the UK and the USA.

Matthew David Lewis was born on June 27,  1989 in Leeds, England. He started acting when he was 5. His most famous roles include the portrayal of Jamie Bradley in the first season of the drama series The Syndicate (2012) and Corporal Gordon “Towerblock” House in comedy drama Bluestone 42 (2013).

Evanna Patricia Lynch was born on August 16, 1991, in Termonfeckin, Ireland. Besides her acting work in Harry Potter, she has created some fashion accessories and recorded an audiobook. Lynch has also done many photoshoots modelling for different magazines.

13. Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley)

Harry Edward Melling was born on March 17, 1989 in London, England. He comes from a family of actors: his maternal grandfather was Patrick Troughton, best know for his portrayal of the Second Doctor in British sci-fi series Doctor Who. Harry lost so much weight, that the role of Dudley was almost recast, so he had to wear a fat suit for his scenes in the last Harry Potter.

Shirley Henderson was born on November 24, 1965, in Forres, Scotland. When she was young, she sang at local clubs, and even at a boxing match. She was 37 when she played the character of Moaning Myrtle in 2002 movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This makes her the oldest actors to ever portray a teenager.

John Marwood Cleese was born on October 27, 1939 in Somerset, England. The actor, comedian, screenwriter and a producer is best known for co-founding the comedy troupe Monty Python in the late 60s. Even at 78 years of age, Cleese is still working and taking on small parts.

Some of his most successful movies include historical drama The Schindler’s List (1993), war drama The English Patient (1996), and more recently the comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and the last two James Bond films, Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015).
