You’ve encountered the words “Thin Blue Line” somewhere before? Now you’ll find out what it means and the history behind it.
In literature, the thin blue line is the line that holds society together, the line between order and chaos. While in reality, the blue line represents a symbol of law enforcement support.
This trend started in the UK as a way to promote support and respect for fallen police officers. Since then, it has expanded to the US and Canada.
April Killingsworth is a manager of a printing company in Texas. She decided to use this method to show gratitude to the police officers in her community. She was familiar with the thin blue line, so she decided to stick a piece of blue masking tape across her car’s rear windshield.
Tensions between law enforcement and the communities they patrol were at an all time high in 2016. Due to there being quite a few shootings of unarmed black men by officers, this gave the profession and those in it an unfavorable light, but April still wanted to show the officers in her area that she supports them.
A huge turnout for the blue line
She posted a picture of her and her car with the blue tape and implored all her closest people to do the same. The post actually received a lot more attention than expected.
She spoke to ‘KTRE News’ and said: ‘When we first posted it, it was kind of a sporadic thing that morning. I asked my employee to cut a few blue stripes and he asked how many and I told him five. We’ll be lucky if five people even show up.’ She certainly got a much higher response than she had planned for. It must have been great to see how the support for the law enforcement is shared around her community.
Local people showed up, as well as people from all over Texas. ‘It was unbelievable. I made the turn and I was like, ‘oh wow look at all of this!’ I had to fight to get into my driveway. I don’t even know how many stripes have been cut and stuck and given away. It’s insane,’ said April.
